I am completely going through the whole front end of a 1998 VTR1000F. I have the hoist but exactly were dose one hoist from to allow me to remove the steering stem let alone everything else? .
No. I mean on the bike. I have a idea were to run the straps so I can remove the steering steam. I just was wondering what others were doing incase I missed something or break something.
Take the cowls off and take the tank off so you won't damage anything just in case. You should see the job clear in front of you now. Support the rear of the bike on both sides of the swingarm at the axle using a bike stand or even 7 foot long pieces of 2x4 pieces of wood stacked; thats kinda hillbilly but it will work. You can use the top yoke to lift the front of the bike just high enough to have the front wheel an inch or two off the ground. Then you are going to set it back down on some blocks at the front of the oil pan. The bike balances about halfway along the oil pan; support the front of the oil pan and bike will rock back. Support the back of the oil pan and bike will rock forward. Not sure if I'm helping you much.
I place a rear stand like the one in the picture then I use a front stand to raise the front to place a wood block or a padded scissor jack under the front of the pan then remove the front stand and start the job.
I'd run it through the areas marked in red.
I lifted mine like this for replacing the side cover, i had just got the bike and didn't have a paddock stand or anything else at the time.
You can carefully use a rear stand, then slowly lift the front wheel off the ground under the oil sump, like showed above. just be very careful. I can't imagine getting it from above w/o removing the tank, or being on the tank w/ straps.
