HELP!!! Lights out!

Hey guys, well i just finally got my new H4 bulb for the bike and i installed it and it ran and then i got to my friends house and no lights. OMG! No brights or lows. So umm, is there a fuse on our bike controlling the headlights? I got some really cool bright ones that i have used in my car, but they were 100w instead of the standard 65, but i was thinking, that could possibly kill a fuse. So please let me know. Thanks!

Other then that, the bike has been running amazingly due to all your guys support! Thanks so much, i am getting around 33mpg now!! I am soo happy, i just would like to ride at night now.

Do you have a Honda VTR1000F Service Manual? If you have one then you should be able to find it in the manual. If not, there's a link on this forum somewhere that takes you to a website for a free download of the service manual. If you still can't get it then just PM me with your email address and I'll e-mail it to you as an attachment (PDF file). Good luck!!

Ok, i got the manual, but it didnt help. No troubleshooting for the headlights. I have no voltages coming out of any of the connections on the headlamp now. Please advise Greg or bill. Thanks!

The fuse box is under the seat. Check those first. Anything else not working?

Everything else seems to be working fine. THe little light, all my turn and marker lights are running fine. I thought the bulb just died, but it didn't. Truthfully the bulb looked very very dim when i turned it on, but it did work atleast. IT was the day time though. But i drove about 6 miles and then no lights at all. I am so glad my buddy noticed, otherwise i would have been stuck without lightage
i will check the fuse box. Thanks!

I just ordered 60/55 bulbs instead. I really wish the 100's would have worked

Ok, tested it thusmorning before i rode. I found out 2 things. Fuses are fine. What seems to have happened when i installed the new bulb is my ground was killed. I used my multimeter and found .1v running when i grounded it on the handlebars. So that seems super low, i was assuming that they would be using atleast 6 or the full 12v. I dont know. does anyone? I might call you Greg this afternoon. Thanks!

It should be 12 volts. You bike has been wrecked and there is a good chance your wiring harness got pinched up front. I had the same problem on my bike for several different wires that periodically failed. I was able to trace back to the breaks on my bike but if you are unable just run a new wire. Using a multi connector you can splice right in without cutting any wires.

Futz with the starter switch. Mine is buggered up and sometimes when you partially depress it it will catch such that the lights are off (save voltage for starter), but the starter isn't engaged, thus no lights. I've got to check it when I start it up in daylight, and all it takes it flicking the thumb button a couple of times until it pops clear.

Yeah, mine does that too. The relay kills the headlight to provide max power to the starter. The relay gets old and sticks sometimes. It's okay to hit the starter button while the bike is running. It's not like a car.

I sounds like you have a short. Use your multimeter to locate which wire is shorted and if you have any breaks. If its not blowing fuses you know its on the supply side of the fuse panel. You should have fuses for the main feed and for each individual circuit so without fuses blown the short should be between the battery and starter solenoid or battery and rectifier because they are unfused. I have a manual that does a great job of explaining the circuits and it would be easy to locate the bad wire(s). Let me know if your manual is lacking. Mine is in pdf format and I may be able to point you in the right direction for a free download or at the very least email you some screen shots.

Yup thats the one. My number is 509-599-9148 local spokane but it may change soon as I'm getting an alaska number.

As far as the smoking battery goes I checked and the rectifier/regulator runs through the main fuse so thats probably not the problem but you may check the voltage at the battery at 2500 rpm (should be 14.9 or lower) because if the battery is smoking the regulator is probably smoked.
As far as the headlight issue the 100 watt headlight shouldn't be a problem. I've been running 110 watt low beams and 120 watt highs for as long as I've had my bike. Do either high or low work. If both are out its probably the ground or positive feed to the switch. Check for continuity at ground. If it is good check for voltage at the positive supply in the headlight switch. That should narrow it down to one wire. Good luck!

Thanks again mike, yeah, all i know is that everything was working totally fine before i got those new bulbs. They turned on for a few minutes and then went out. Now no bulbs will work. I don't get it. I am guessing that the ground wasnt too good, but now the whole system has been messed up. Battery toast and probably also the regulator/rectifier. The only thing i changed was the bulb.
