Headlight updgrade
Hey folks,
I am looking at replacing the stock headlight bulb with something with a little bit (make that a lot!) more candle-power. Any suggestions from others who have made a successful switch?

The chap is selling "adaptor rings" which he claims are needed to switch to H4 bulbs. Is this true? If so, I guess I will have to pick some up from him.

I have never used an adapter ring for my headlight bulb. I haven't noticed any detrimental side effects.
As for headlight bulb upgrades, I thought the Lluminic bulbs were good. I recently dropped in an HID kit and the lightoutput is much greater, but the beam goes everywhere (since the SHawk doesn't have projector headlights).
Otherwise, the stock headlight illuminates the road pretty well.

He's partially right. Some honda's do require it like my old 94vfr. The VTR doesn't since it uses a standard H4 bulb. I have a 55w/80w which is much better. Sylvania Silverstars are a nice legal alternative and can be bought in single packs.

+1 on the Silverstars. Everything else I own is HID, so I'm spoiled, but the Silverstar's have a great quality light, especially compared to the washed out yellow of stock halogen. I now consider the headlight fixed.

I'd love to put a couple of auxillary projector lights on a toggle but haven't found anyone who knows if the charging system can handle it.
I already changed my bulb to a PIAA and am very happy with the results.

Head light is 55 watts
brake Light is 42 watts (when on)
Tail light is 10 watts
Position light is 5 watts
Instrument lights are Approx 6 watts
Unknowns are the fan motor and the Ignition.
I'll put a meter on the SH tonight and see what real world draw is..
So far we have 118 watts when the brake lights are on... The fan will suck up a lot.. but, not likely to be on at the same time AUX lights are running.
My bet is, you'd be safe with 1 Halogen AUX light.. or two HID's Which is what I'm looking at doing.
I use a pair of HID's from a company called TrailTech as helmet light along with an 8" HID as my main race light.. Great combo.
Once I get home, I'll know for sure what the SH uses for power

Where I live has a billion deer that come out at night like vermin. The headlight is woefully inadequate. I need something that shines into the bushes on the sides of the road and light up their eyes.

As for what can ya use,, it's simple math. As soon as I check the actual power use we will have a number to deal with.
Then, you use the assumed number of 280 possible watts of available power,, and do the math for what is extra.
Few things to consider.
Wiring harness, connections, battery condition all play into wither the stator can actually get the power to the system.. add in a regulator that is know to fail when used at the max capacity (like a failing battery, one that is allow to discharge, and be charged with the bikes stator, and not a charger) or, if you were to use the bike a fair amount while taxing the charging system to full capacity.. Like, say,, standard running needs plus heated vest and gloves, or Aux lights, ect ect,... While I have no firm numbers on what can be used safely.. I'd make an educated guess based on what I know, and what I have learned about the SH, ,,and say,, you should shoot for no more then 80% capacity. That is of course just a WAG.
80% would make the target number 224 watts
