Go Easy!!!
Ok so before everyone starts to hammer away at me, Yes I know there is a bunch of info about oil and filters on here.
I went to my local Wally World and they had filters, Bosh, Purolator and Fram (no, no). But no more Super Tech. And prices were ok $3-$11.
BUT they had no oil I needed. All the synthetic oils they had in stock 10w30 or 10w40 was Energy Conserving. Also non were the API SJ grade. They all had API SN.
Not sure if SN is a higher grade then SJ but didnt want to take a chance and put it in the bike and have issues with the clutch.
SO I didnt get a thing. Instead I went to my local Honda dealer and got RAPED for 4qts of Mobil 1 10w40 "Bike Oil" and a tiny little filter. $60+ bucks for those 5 items. HOLY CRAP!!!!!
So I guess I need to find out if any of the 10w30 to 15w50 with the API SN grade will be ok to run in our bikes, so I dont get raped again in 3k miles.

Yeah 7 I thought of that, but again didnt want to get stuck with the API SN grade oil when the bike calls for SJ. SO I knew Honda had it since I was just there the other day and figured I error on the side of caution. Didnt think I get Raped!!!
So I gotta find out if the SN is a higher level than SJ, if so then next time Ill know.

OK so this is what I just found-
oilspecifications.org - Lubricant standards and specifications
Looks like API SM would work just fine.

According to this SN is a newer oil and is backwards compatible with the SJ requirement... It's relating it all to cars, but if I understand it correctly as long as it's not "energy conserving" it won't be bad for your clutch.
API Motor Oil Service Classifications
Also, note that the last sentence I said is an assumptions, which gets me into trouble a lot

Most Walmarts and Autozone sell Shell Rotella synthetic. It works great in bikes. Is it the best? Don't know, but thousands of forum members on this forum and SVrider and others are using it with good results.
Shell Rotella® Products | Shell Rotella
Rotella was less than $22/gallon at Walmart last week. It is compatible with a wet clutch.
Flame on.

5W40 may be light for an air-cooled twin (mostly due to heat) but is fine for a liquid-cooled engine like the VTR...... It`s worth noting that many bike owners prefer the mineral Rotella (15W40) to the synth as it`s proven to be more shear resistant in many applications (bike clutches and gearboxes being renowned for shearing oil and causing a drop in viscocity).....

Mik, thats good to know. Just finished the oil change in preparation of Bike Week. Not sure what the PO had in it, but it was still fairly clean when I drained it. Next oil change Im gonna look in to the Shell oil and the lighter weight. I remember running 5w30 M1 in my ZX6 and it held up nicely.

Greg, I was thinking the same thing. Today was a good example while in Daytona Bike Week. Stop and go traffic. Fans going non stop and I was thinking 15w50 would help with the heat and constant stop and go. OH did I mention what normally takes and hour to get home from Daytona to Melbourne, took 2 hrs do to a non stop rain!!!! Im still soaked!!!! But it was fun.
