fuel screw trouble

is it just me or did anybody else have trouble turning the fuel screw? I bought the D shaped bit to turn the screw, but because the screw is a soft metal, it just striped the head. after, i tried to slot the screw so i can use a screwdriver to turn it instead but still wouldnt move. anybody know an alternative? Im not sure if i can buy those screws or need a whole new carb now.

did it happen on one or both of them, you may have to go deeper with the slotting to get it out.
on my old carbs, they were stuck too,but didnt attempt to get them out since i had new carbs with needles that moved in and out.
im not sure, but you may be able to get to them from the inside, but im not sure at all.
someone who knows will chime in.
it is important not to ever put any kind of force on it at all when putting them in,just seat it lightly and youre there, for when you put new ones in.

Both times I have done this, I just used some tweezers to get the d-shaped screw out. Then on the bench put a slot in them. I've never had a issue removing them?
That sucks!

May soak with some WD-40 overnite, and try again? if they are cross-threaded you could be SOL! Post up a pciture of what you have done so far, I'm sure some one on here can help. Where are you located?

Pilot screw pics

You may be able to slot the Pilot screw a bit deeper than you already have. Here are a couple of pics that will give you an idea what I did to slot them. Hope this helps.

Pilots are not fuel screws.

Those d-shaped screws are baffling. Very dumb design. I always use a dremel and slot the heads so a flathead screwdriver can be used. Way easier and simpler.

I assumed the OP was talking about the Pilot screw (see 5-11, 5-13 and 5-21 of the service manual). If not, I'm not aware of another D-shaped screw.

because the metal is so soft, the heads are completely broken off on both screws. i have installed a 48 pilot, hopefully the bike will run ok with the stock fuel screw settings. btw how did u install image on a post, do u have to upload it to a image site 1st?

Heat? I would recommend against that. Just use a dremmel cut-off wheel to slot it.
(or by hand with a hacksaw blade)

Heating carbs can only lead to great unhappiness. They were not designed to survive that.

I would just slot it like others have mentioned. Remember... lefty, loosy! Maybe spray tons of cleaner down in there.

To attache pics, either host them on a site like photobucket and copy the link, or you can open your attached ones and click on the little "insert image" mountains a the top of your screen, copy the html and insert it a like so:

finally! i dremmel down half to the threads and they both came out with PB blaster, muscle and patience. i will post pics later. i noticed that the front carb fuel screw had a little washer in between the spring and the rubber seal. However the rear carb was missing that washer...do any of u know if there is supposed to be a washer? looks like the fuel screw has been tampered with because it was set at 2.5 turns

Toeknee19,I have a spare carbs I'm not using right now,and will be rebuilding down the road,if you want,I can let you have the needles in mine,so you could get a nice solid slot.

Just curious, why are you taking them all the way out anyway?
