Fork top cap - socket size? 24mm?

I am replacing springs and oil and it looks like the top cap takes a 24mm socket. I don't have that size and want to be sure before I go hunt one down and buy. Closest places are 40 minute drives. If anybody could verify would really appreciate. Also, jNorthWRX sold his Hawk so we probably won't be seeing too much of him but I bought Race Tech springs from him and he was great to deal with. Paid Saturday and received them today.

Yeah. Fork caps are 24 mm, but before you drive 40 minutes realize a 15/16 socket or wrench will work fine. So would a big vice grip or pliers with some tape over the jaw teeth.

Thanks for the confirmation. I put a 15/16 wrench on it and it wasn't quite snug enough and I was worried about rounding the edges. How snug is the cap on? I don't have any 15/16 sockets, which would give me a little more confidence in not rounding the edges.

the caps are orings sealed and there not very tight at all i mean you got really pissed off you could do it with your teeth... hehe just stick a adj wrench on it SNUGLY and just tap the end of the wrench on the left going to the right and it will pop right loose .... at least every friggin cap i ever took loose was basically hand tight. you may have had Bob the gorilla tighten them b4. oh it helps to loosen your clip ons b4 you try to un screw the cap....

The caps are aluminum. They can get messed up pretty easily if the wrench or socket isn't a good fit.

When installing the top cap, what kind of pressure is required pushing down on the cap to compress the spring and get the threads started?

Well if you unscrew your preloads and take the front end off the ground(which should have already been done) its not to much force on stock springs but if you put in new ones with a bigger spacer it could get a bit rough... just make sure you get at least 3 4 therads started b4 you let go of the cap or it will strip them and possibley knock yo butt out

Hint: Use the 15/16" if you want but use a shop towel/paper towel between the socket or wrench and the cap to prevent marring the aluminum. Those fork caps are actually aluminium (for you Brits and Aussies), kinda like unobtainium - expensive and hard to buy by themselves if buggered up.

Yeah, the last thing you want is to booger the aluminum fork cap. Unless somebody over torqued them down though, they come up pretty easy so if you're careful and pad the jaws vice grips, channel locks etc, can work.

The thing about a 15/16 socket is that it is nominally just slightly undersize (23.8 mm) so be sure it slides all the way down over the "nut" part and is flush with the top flat part of the cap. If it is, it will work fine.

My 15/16 twelve point socket fits perfect. I don't have one, but a six point might be tight.
