First track day. Melt my boot... help

Yesterday I did my first track day with the VTR. I went verry well... Alot faster than my 2002 VFR800... My only problem is that I melt my right boot pretty bad on the lower pipe of the Mig.
I would like to know if someone is providing some cover for the pipe? Stainless, aluminium, Carbon fiber I dont mind.

Thanks!

I've had a similar problem with my Jardine high mounts. I melted the heel of my boot so bad that the sole was flopping off (my boots are old, mind you). I've adjusted my foot position to compensate - I don't put the tip of my toes on the peg but rather more like the ***** of the my foot instead. I also tip my heel to inside and actually lay it on top of the aluminum heel guard of the stock rearsets. It works pretty decent.

I might be able to make you a heat guard if you can provide me with a cardboard pattern

i sold my highmounts for this reason. putting on a heat shield will keep you from melting your boot but it will also prevent you from getting a good heel position (imo). as you hang off farther you'll need to rotate your outside foot which the pipes prevent . so now i have low mounts... that drag on the ground.

A very minimal adjustment to your foot position could have corrected you touching your heel to the pipe. I don't touch my pipe at all anymore.

Tomorow I will take some picture of the lower pipe. I am wondering if I could (Or someone else ...) fabricate a 1/2 sleeve that can go around the pipe? The other solution I guess is to put some wrapping around that section?

I just bought a set of short chrome heatshields from a Hardley shop. They at about 1/4" of space but it's enough. I also have some 3M insulated tape stuff to stick on the inside but I havent needed it.

And then there's that third option..... I'm not sure if I mentioned that yet.....

Keep in mind that you are trying to maintain a situation where your heel is pushing against the exhaust. Do you really want to do that?

everybody has their own style & some things worked OK to a point... but to adjust my foot position away from where it needs to be just because a manufacturer bent a pipe a certain way isn't something i'm willing to do.

it really was a hindrance to increasing corner speed on a few sections of the track. maybe you just don't ride that fast ?

as mine is a full time race bike and pretty is very far down on the list, I had my mid pipe extended to make my feet fit. shorted the canister to retain the stock look and have had no problems with foot position since, but I have size 13 boots and did not care about astetics because it's not the prettyest set up.

I had to rest my heels on my Leo vince midpipe at my last track day. it left some little black marks but my boots are still ok. but for this year I'm gonna get a set of those footpegs that you can adjust to rotate and lock in like 8 possitions. I need just a little more clearance anyway cause I was scraping the stock pegs. I know I know, pick the bike up, and hang off more, but I was off quite a bit. and she could lean further.

I have had the same problem since I bought the hawk.

I did not have a problem on the street, my size 14 boots rested on the exhaust, but did not melt. The boots I originally had for the track were these cheap Nitro boots that are now basically worthles...

My first attempt was wrapping the exhaust in that fiberglass wrap. That did not wrok, my boots just melted to the fiberglass.

Second attempt was to get the Jardine Hi-mount exhaust, but now the problem was melting the sides of my boots instead of the bottom.

Wrapping the Hi-mount once again just caused the melted boots on the wrap, no the pipe.

Over the winter I got the Cobra heat shield (I believe that is what is pictured above) and put it over the heat wrap. I also got a new pair of boots, the new ones are Alpinesatrs and have hard plastic on the inside. My first trackday was this weekend, and no melting!!! The heat shield was cool enough to touch (briefly) after getting off the track.

On a side note, the new tracks in NJ are awesome. I got moved up to the intermediate group and got my knee down/speed up on every corner!!!
