Clunka Clunka Clunka.... But it didn't seize!

Well it happened.... I just started off from a stop light, when the engine started making a clunka clunka clunka sound.... Thank God it didn't take me too much time before I figured out something was wrong and shut it off..... But at least it did not seize!!! So, is it a safe assumption that since it was making those sounds, that there was some valve/piston touching? Inspection revealed it was the front tensioner... Any guesses as to whether it will run after replacing the tensioners. I also figure that I will need to pull off the valve covers and check both the cam timing before running it. Could valves be bent and it still (sorta) runs, but not something to do intentionally and for any amount of time? I have a entire donor engine ready for a fresh rebuild and wonder about spending time trying to make this one work, when in the end it may run but be damaged, and therefore need to be partially rebuilt anyway.... Any input would be greatly appreciated.... Darren.

Wish I could be more helpful, but I've only had mine a week. Can I ask what year your SH is and at what mileage the CCT went out?

Thanks

thanks. my 98 is at about 12k, so that makes me feel a little bit better, although I know it doesn't mean all that much. the cct's are next on my service list. just wish there was a sure fire way to go. some people like the ape's and some people say to go with an updated honda cct. what's the safest bet?

I bought the APE's and am hoping for the best.... Though it may be a lot of work, I think I will try the retiming the cams thing, and see how it runs.... with a bit of luck, it will be okay, and I can ride while I get going ont the rebuild of the donor engine....
