Another track day under our belts

Well,

Just finished another glorious crash-free track day at MSR Cresson! Bill (CNI Dawg) and I went out there, along with my good buddy on his TL1000S, and showed those IL4's how to ride corners. Then they appropriately buzzed the $hit out of us in the straights. The cool thing about track days is you can sense improvement every single time you go out there. I was dragging my kneepucks through virtually every turn and even got a pretty cool video of it (I won't have it for a few weeks though). We still both ran in Level 1, but there are some pretty damn fast riders even in the beginner level! For those of you contemplaying a track day, it's a great chance to really ride your bike like it was intended to be ridden. Don't get me wrong, you can have fun on the street and on the twisties, but it is so nice to have all the obstacles and distractions removed from the roadway so you can really push the hell out of your machine. I don't know about Bill or my TL friend, but I'm starting to consider getting some racing components on my bike. I'm not talking about slash cut pegs either, I mean like slicks, a racing suspension, and a slipper clutch. But each of those mods are over $500, so it's something to consider about for a while. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go take a few more Advil.

Do they make slipper clutches for the Superhawk???

Are you going to mount slicks on your extra wheelset?

BWAHAHAHA! Did you ever notice that track and crack are spelled the same except the first letter. You're hopelessly addicted, I can read it in the writting. Amen on the supension do that first before anything else, keep an eye peeled on ebay for a good shock and I love the inverted forks. A side bonus is you get better brakes in the process when doing the front end. I think I did my front end for just under $500 and I've alredy gone through it so I'll help you with any question when you're ready. You'll be able to go faster if you do the brakes and suspension before any engine mods. You might not be talking about slash cut pegs but rear sets are a nice addition for clearence and feel. As far as slicks....they're nice but there are a lot of capable tires out there before you spend your money on slicks just yet. Take a road trip and join me in April at Jennings, I'd love to ride with a superhawk that can keep up with me.

I keep asking you...
Come to Barber 8)

Not sure if I could keep up or not, but we could have fun.

Yep, track days are where it's at.
Spending time on the track does diminish the need (and desire) to ride fast on the streets. And that is a good thing in my book.

It would have to be Loco cause I'm old & SLOW !
Everybody passed me but I still had fun.
I'm getting a little better but it's gonna take some time.
If I wasn't so tired I'd like to do it again today hehehe

Too bad I'm gonna miss next month's track day 'cause of stupid work

Yep, it HAS slowed me down on the streets!
It's like "Why go fast on the street? It will never be like on the track!"

I did notice myself speeding up on the street about a month after last track day...told me I "NEED" another track day!!!

I know...I know but Jennings is even a 6 hour drive for me. Come down here I'm sure you could keep up, I'm no Nicky Hayden or anything.

+1 on the speed I go ALOT slower than I used to. I just remind myself I'll be back there soon and the ends of my mouth start to curl up in a big sh## eating grin.

Re: Another track day under our belts

Hey Loco,
I changed the position of my Gilles rear set pegs & it changed my position on the bike the last session.
Felt like i was better balanced & the bike was more stable.
Easier to move on the pegs too.

You can pick up some rear sets off ebay for $359.
I've seen them with a starting bid for $329 before.
Couldn't find them for that right now
I'll help you install them if ya want.

Anybody else seen Superhawk rearsets for less???
Sound off....Loco "needs" some!
Dam I'll never be able to catch him if he keeps getting faster!

I have Harris rearsets, they're not cheaper but you might be able to find them somewhere else for cheaper or even talk them down. I have these on my bike and love them as well, I think most of the rearsets out there are good quality. I have a pic. somewhere I'll put up because the superhawk ones are slightly different.

Re: Another track day under our belts

LOL

Realistically, I'd probably put a race compound tire (i.e. Pilot Race) on the extra rear rim, but I don't have a front rim so I'm not sure whether it would even be possible to have a trackday combo. How far is Jennings from Dallas? I'd love to try some other tracks, and do they allow motorcycles at Laguna Seca? I've ridden it hundreds of times in my Dodge Viper GTS on my PlayStation (GT3 roxx), but I run off the corkscrew and slam into the wall like 90% of the time, so maybe not!

As far as speed, I'd like to say I go slower on the road, but I know thats not true. Maybe for a few days, but for me it's like good sex I guess, you just want it and can't suffice with a track day here and there. I CAN say that I don't plan on riding for at least another two or three days (recovery period is similar too LMAO).

I'm no Rossi, but I like riding fast, if it's under control. I will post my video when I get it, because I am not embarrassed by my performance out there. I did my best, and I feel great about it. Bill, when you got your video, did it have your complete two laps on it or was it a compilation of everyone riding, montage-style?

How far is Houston from Dallas? I've done to Houston and back before, it's no hop skip and jump by any means but not ridiculous either. Realistically, if we were serious about it we should probably do Barber in Ala. since it's more centrally located.

Oh and I said slowed down....not got slow.

Here's a pic of the NEW track we didn't get to ride yesterday (black road). Wasn't quite finished yet.
You can just barely see the old track (in grey) that we did ride.

The old track:

Cost $100 for 1 day with lunch included (burgers, chiips, & hot dogs)
(we got 7 sessions on the track)
Level 4 with Ty Howard instructing is $150 i think....gonna be a LONG time before I'll be good enough to do that one

--------------------------

Hey Loco,
Maybe we should take the CMRA license class, get our ticket, & go ride Oak Hill Racetrack in Henderson Tx almost any time we want for $75/day.
Has no food, no water, no EMS,,,just the track

Here's a better picture

Re: Another track day under our belts

They have EMS for race days.
Any other time it's empty except for guys practicing.
The owner charges $75/CMRA racer to practice.
That's why you need to go with a friend(s).
CMRA race license required or you can't ride there.

We can get a paper license good for 1 year with the CMRA class.
For the full license you have to race 3 CMRA races w/o crashing.
It's good for years then.... I think.

Nice guy, sounds like a deal but 3 races without crashing!!! What do they want miracles? If you don't crash you weren't going fast enough. Ah to be a teenager and have that philosophy again.

Maybe would could plan one late summer or fall?

Re: Another track day under our belts

It would be cool if we could all get together for a track day.

I probably will never see so many Superhawks passing me

I'm hoping when the pictures & video are out I will see SOME improvement in my riding.
I've kinda resigned that I won't be able to progress as quickly as I would have 25 years ago.
My reflexes, balance, endurance, sight, recovery, etc. aren't what they once were.
I'm just thankful I can still ride for fun.
Some old geezers like me just drink beer & watch football for fun.... boring !

Age is no excuse, I got my *** handed to me at the gap by a guy 9 yrs older than you. But the whole point of a trackday IS to have fun so you're already doing it.

And you don't have to be old to sit in front of the tv watching football either I've wasted sevral good life times doing that.

Probably, looked like he was born on the the bike. If he used to ride like that when he was young it would be all to easy with todays bikes.
