Welcome to the site.

I would seriously doubt is has 173hp, I don't know the exact spect but its around 100 give or take in stock form. Some folks on here have posted dyno results on modded engines and they were in the 115 or so range. You would have to do some serious work to build it up that high and it wouldn't be cheap. 40K isn't that bad on these bikes and if it runs good, is complete and doesn't leave clouds of blue (oil burning) smoke it would be a good deal for $1600. Things to watch out for are cam chain tensioners (CCTs) that can go without warning and the regulator/rectifier (R/R) in the charging system - replace it with a later (2001 on) oem unit with cooling fins or convert to run on a R1/R6 unit. do a search for these mods if you want more info.

Sounds sketchy to me. 173hp? And I bet he changes the oil after every ride too. Not a bad deal for a parts bike IMO, but I wouldn't trust it for an everyday ride. Who did the engine rebuild? Receipts? Why was it done in the first place? How bout some pics of this fire breathin 'Hawk? What condition is the rest of it in? There are good deals on these bikes everywhere, even Ebay. Less than $4k should get you a decent one.

I have one for sale here on the forum for $3500 that you should check out. I would be weary of a Superhawk putting out 173hp. And like Rickb said, 40k miles isn't bad for one of these. It just sounds like this one was ridden hard and put away wet. Honda's are super-reliable and you have to work pretty hard to blow one up. I think you can find a better overall deal than this one. Even if you don't look at mine, keep shopping around. If you find a good deal, you won't be disappointed with the bike.

I'd get more info on who did the motor before I bought anything. there was a guy in germany doing 155hp motors but that thing was at a true superbike spec and required frequent rebuilds like any true race motor. but the only thing stock about that motor was the cases.

but if he only wants 1600 and the rest of the bike is good, even if the motor is trashed you could get another motor for less the 1000 and have a good bike for 2500

Make sure the engine was not played with, a good leakdown test would tell a lot on the engine health.
Exhaust, jets, air filter are easy mods, and some people are just a bit too optimistic, well way too optimistic.

Yea I think the hp numbers are way off but still I think its a good deal as long as its in as good of condition as he says it is. I've been working on and fixing wrecked/non running bikes for a few years now. So once I give her a look over I will make my final decision this say. Hell even if the motor goes mmi she goes lol. I just wasn't sure of the value of this bike. Thanx for all the info guys ill keep you informed.

! 127 from that guy in Italy is as high as I've seen for a heavily modded street 'hawk.

173 is BS

Bullshit...take him to a dyno and make him look like an *** when it lays down 95-100 hp ...Keep in mind what a better bike you may be able to get for 1k more...I'm the king of cheap bikes but sometimes too cheap for something that may need too much work can get expensive fast. Rebuilds without receipts are worthless. Just keep in mind the cost of fixing potential problems it may have. Having said that I picked up a clean title '99 with 20k miles for 1k. Has brand new michelins and 520 chain kit. Sold all the broken bodywork, exhaust, hugger, put new front rotors, a few odds and ends and lotsa cleaning and I have a perfect running superhawk for maybe 500.00. Add bodywork and painting and a few other odds and ends and I'll have a really clean superhawk for around 1k. But some mechanicals on cheap stuff are a leap of faith. Good luck.

Yea I hope she turns out ok. I've been flipping biks on and off if all else fails ill just sell or part out. The body work is mint except the tank has a small dent in it. We shall see how it turns out. Not really wanting to spend any more then 15 on the next bike as If I was i'd get a 4 banger. I''ve had v twins before (sv's) but just preffer 4's. But for the price of her I just can't pass her up.

Well wait a min here. Mine is Jetted K&N. 520 chain (which has nothing to do with ponies and a Full two brothers system and I put out 125 HP at the rear wheel with 75 FT LBS Steady after 3500 RPM. And Mine I don't consider heavily modded.

I'll let you know what the bike the OP was referring to is capable of when I get it on the dyno. It's at the shop I work at and so far, so good - motor seems to be tight and has a significant jump in power over the stock 2006 we have here at the shop. I'm picking up things like chain, sprockets, tires, brakes - the bike was in serious need of attention!

Sorry, the stock bike we have at the shop is a 2004, not a 2006! I just spent the last two weeks riding that 2004 (while rebuilding my carbs then waiting on replacement parts for my 98 Suzuki Bandit 1200).

On this 1998 the thread is about, I'm still waiting to get the title woes worked out (the previous owner lost the title) and then I will begin the repairs & dyno testing... Then I'll have to work out the riding position to satisfy the wife (she HATED the riding position on the shop's 04 S'hawk) and negotiate a trade with the boss.

Anyone have ideas about a way to make the SH more tour-friendly other than upright handlebars, a custom taller seat, and Buell Lightning pegs?

Ride it more or get a VFR. Or get a RC51 which will make both of you appreciate the fine comfort and easy riding of the Superhawk.

Good gloves, not too tight with good padding inside, a tank bag that you will rest your chest on, higher handlebars, good riding gear, well set up suspension.
But you legs will still hurt, stretch often.
