So this morning on my way home I was fallowing a guy I work with who rides an SV650 and I want to know is it normal that he could out accelerate me and leave me behind I know I will probably get crap for writing this but it just seems to me that a 996cc bike could at least catch an 650cc bike or am I just dreaming ? My bike runs ok but doesn't seem to get in the real power till after 6 grand by that time he had already left me in the dust. Now I know his bike is fuel injected and mine is not but maybe I'm just wanting more from my S-hawk than it can give me. Please help me solve this problem.

 

That would be a tuning issue...

 

Or perhaps he is in the right gear and you are not...

I had both bikes in my stable for a while. Honestly after back to back rides on these bikes, to me it felt like my Hawk had twice the motor!! So NO, it's not normal. Somethin' is up with your VTR.

Yeah - they have quite a bit of power for a 650, but with no real weight advantage and a 20-30hp difference there should be no way it's faster.

Like mentioned above, if he caught you in the wrong gear and he was on it hard, sure but heads up, no way.

 

The SV is about 50 lbs. lighter than a Superhawk, which is significant.
It is not near as fast in a straight line, though.

 

Here is an easy way to look at your question.

In Irish Road Racing, they have a class called "Super Twins" which is a 650 twin class.

Here is a list of what was done to a 2012 bike:

JHS Racing Supertwin motor:
Carrillo custom rods
Kent cams
CP pistons
JHS Racing valves and valve springs
JHS Racing bespoke exhaust system
JHS Racing carbon air intake
JHS Racing airbox
AIM dash and datalogging sensors
Power Commander V Bespoke JHS power map
NGK Iridium spark plugs

With that, they got 90 BHP at the rear wheel or around 10 BHP less than a stock VTR.

So the answer should be pretty clear......no he should not be able to keep you in sight, let alone ever pull away from you.

Brj, I'm sure there wasn't any bad intentions with that question. The point is that if you are 300+, the Superhawk isn't going to be as quick.

Get the tune right and it will eat 650s for breakfast.

Mine keeps 750 GSXRs honest as well.

 

Mine too... I have no straight line problems with GSXR750s, and I trounce CBR600RRs...

Either it's technique, or tuning.
