16/41 top speed~~~~~~?
Hi, all~~~
anybody know how fast a VTR will go with stock gearing?
I'm more interested in actual practical maximum speed,
as opposed to a gearing chart figure.......155?165?
I've seen 140 indicated; my carbureted '98 pulling so strong at that speed,
I'm sure it's got another 20-25 mph.......
I don't care to go faster,
but I'm still curious........anybody know?
~~~~Thanks.
248 Kmh indicated at the most for me... takes a bit of straight thoo... then figure about 10% error at that speed and you get about 225 in real speed...
About 154&140 Mph for you metric challenged...
Actually with stock gearing is just barely possible to hit redline in sixth... You are really close to being overcome by the headwind...
I hit 165 indicated (prob 150-155) while I still had the temp tag (it shredded off) on my first superhawk bone stock and basically brand new. Cycle World magazine put it at 155 when it first came out and later did a test against a Ducati 1000SS and listed it slower at 150. Again why every honda model that goes unchanged for a few years tests slower as the years pass is beyond me...but they all do-f4i, vfr, superhawk...Also had a friend with exhaust and carb fiddling CLAIM to radar his at 161...but I'm not sure about that.
155 with stock gearing as it won't pull to red line. It's 157-159 with 16\43 as it will rev a bit higher in 6th with that gearing...... but just don't ask me where I found that out....
P.S. the speedo is wrapped past 180 indicated at that speed
........I'll never get tired of the way it gets there........
Thanks,
BTW, are there any [available online?] roadtests or reviews
of the SH?
I have 15/44 gearing and just yesterday went for a ride to South Carolina. There is a 5 mile straight that I was able to hit 158. But with that gearing I'm not sure what I was actually doing. All I know is my friend Kevin blew past doing 195. haha
Why would you go UP one at the countershaft and up two in the back?? Thats a net gain of about..... Zero. In fact, its actually geared HIGHER than stock with that combo, which would make you the first SH owner to go that direction with gearing...
I've seen 250 indicated, but I ran out of road.
I've been told by a friend who had on that it will go 260 tops.
This is the only bike I've ever owned that I don't often see top speed.
I don't really know why.
I guess the bike doesn't really demand it too much.
I wanted the tri-metal sprocket and didn't want the loss in fuel mileage. They only make the tri metal in 43 and larger, and I do a lot of long journeys. I may just be the only guy who has done it, but I don't think it was stupid. I got 45 mpg for 990 miles at 90mph going around lake michigan.
totally off topic...
Ok, this is totally off topic, but I felt the need to share. I had a buell blast that hit 98 mph... not bad considering i weigh a deuce and a half. I kinda miss that bike...
