i'm voting for ralph nader or no one! there is no democracy when our politicians are responsible only to corporate lobbyists who finance their campaigns and not the voters who believe they are meaningful constituents in a democracy. Obama sounded good when he was debating Edwards and subscribed to ending special interest group influence. However, once he received the nomination, he immediately spent a half hour kissing up to the all-powerful AIPAC lobby organization. That ended my interest in Obama.

Somebody here makes sense. Why weren't there options for McKinney, Barr, and Nader on the poll? They are running too. If we all continue to vote for the same democrats and republicans we are the ones tho blame for where we are headed. You want change? don't vote for McCain OR Obama.

I don't think the system we have now is capitalism, anymore than theoretical marxism/socialism has ever been practiced in reality - using any of those terms might help to make a stereotype-based argument but has little to do with reality. By capitalism I have always thought of the concept of profiting from the concept/design/sale (including return on the capital necessary to do so) of some service or good. Not simply gaming of markets to profit, futures, selling short, takeovers etc - all of these are simply one form of greed or another, and a historical reason regulation over such greed has, and will always be necessary. Similarly dictatorships and welfare states are bastardizations of concepts behind socialism. To suggest that obama is a marxist/socialist as so many have done on this often mindless thread is inane. If somehow wanting to give people a fair shake is wrong, then our country is beyond saving. And for those who think they have 'done it the hard way, and are self-built men, and pulled themselves up etc etc - you better recount the opportunities you've had. Unless you overcame genuine "underprivilaged", try learning what that is truly like. And I'm not talking about rural poor as underprivilaged. We all suffer by having a large segment of our population dragging the country down.

The simple labeling and name calling is counterproductive - if what we have is capitalism why is so much of it being underwritten by govt. funds?

I "err on the side of life" to give each human a chance to make themselves. What they do with their life is up to them within(or outside
) the boundary of the law. That is the ultimate "Pro-Choice" stance. The choice and ability to fail. There are those who choose the path to success and others who dont. Those that choose higher education and those who dont. Those that apply their talents and those that dont.

Choices have consequences
Rights have responsibilities
Hard work has reward

The only "judgement" passed down is the one that says: "He/She is too untalented, lazy, uneducated, poor, or criminally minded to do for Him/Herself, therefor should be subsidised by the successful ones".

This is not equity. This is not fairness. This is the lowering of standards because those folks "arent good enough". The successfull folks are judged just as everyone else is: By standards.

This is what caused this mess with these defaulting mortgages and the investment instruments that are backed by them. If the Community Reinvestment Act hadnt been changed in 1995 to artificially change to mortgage market dynamic, there wouldnt have been the oppurtunity for "predatory" loans. The federal governement mandated lower standards for loan approval. There was a reason why the standards were there to begin with!

To your point about Capitalism I would add that Government interference in the from of subsidies, tax breaks, and laws that favor one industry or company , often at the behest of lobbyists, is not pure capitalism. Further the absence of anti trust oversight has created Ologopalistic organizations that are too big to fail and will become too big to bail out unless things change.

There are many causes, Graham Leach Bliley now considered one of the foremost; Phil Graham’s bill signed into law by President Clinton in 1999. Further Greenspan’s encouragement and his keeping rates too low too long as will as the ‘general anti regulation philosophy’ of the Republicans contributed significantly more than the act you mention. I agree it had a role but certainly did not cause the crisis on it’s own.

I agree, Jim, but the REAL reason THAT is a problem is because it is 20 or 30 to one on top of government backed loans to people who no sane person or institution would lend money to without an expressed or implied government guarantee.

Forcing children who are barely self-aware to sing praises of a demagogue. WTF do you think I'm trying to say? The guy is not Jesus, fer Chrissake, but the parental units are forcing them to sing praises that state he will save the world as FACT. He MIGHT be able to do that if elected, but what the ****? CHILDREN? The only place I've ever seen that creepy **** was HITLER-JUGEND. But you're of french extraction, I forgot, you must be really slow. actually you see it in most churches every weekend - and then they recite it for the rest of their lives and it rules many of their decisions, who they vote for, policy on things as far reaching as foreign policy/stem cell/birth control/creationism etc............................

Jim TT. I empathize. It has been personal long before this, but perhaps this one hit a cord with you, but re-read the thread with an open mind and you'll see all kinds of it. And I can only refer to the second post of this, most often, ignorant thread, by Superbling. Most people criticized him for wanting to shut down free expression, but I'm sure his comment was from years of watching these things degrade to this point. The internet and texting in general are a terrible way to exchange ideas - it favors the thoughtlessness, simpleminded and mean-spirited side of everyone and rarely opens up minds. Here is that second post:

"There's no need for this here; even in this forum. It does nothing other to
incite. Instead why don't you go for a nice ride on a great bike? Thanks."

Ok, Ok people, let's all take a chill pill for a moment...Things are getting a little out of hand...

None of the name calling, and my daddy did this, or my grandfather did that really matters on here or has anything to do with this discussion.. I know it was to try and prove a point, but again doesn't matter.

Agree to disagree, and go ride...

Another reason why you should not talk Politics, Religion, or what's that other thing? Among friends, co-workers, or anyone else for that matter...

I don't like Obama, I ain't voting for him, end of discussion...Hell, I could end up being wrong, big deal, that's my right as a semi-free American...

I will take care of my own, and the government will continue to rob from me to give to the poor, that's the way it is and nothing is gonna change that...Not even the new Change Master, hell, he'll make it worse...If it ever gets to bad I'll pack up and move to another country...That's my story and I am sticking to it!

OK, I've been called a racist, and intimated that I am incapable of rational thought and ignorant; but I laughed these off. I don't go to church and have no kids but not because I don't believe in God or am gay, just don't want to be a hypocrite and the chicks have all just fleeced me. Sorry to upset you for responding in kind to the way you described me. BTW, I'm of french extraction, too: 3 French brothers immigrated in 1780 to South Carolina to have a citrus plantation, their names were Ravanne. So I can take it as well as dish it.

But I'll agree to disagree and take a chill pill too and go ride.
