WTB - regulator / rectifier and connector
My regulator is bad (sending 17V to battery) and it toasted my battery and damaged the 6-pin regulator connector. The connector probably should be replaced but I can't find it listed as a separate part - see attached image. I don't want to buy the entire wire harness and replace it. $250+ for the harness and a big job to install it. Best price I could find on a (new aftermarket) regulator is $106.
Anyone know where I can get a connector and a a lower price on a regulator?
TIA

My local bike shop was able to dig up a connector kit (mine was melted). It came with the spades and fit the factory piece.
But then I went ahead and just put a Yamaha unit in and ran soldered spades to it with heat shrink over them.
I'll see if I have the connector still, although I mightve given it back to the shop.

Cheapest replacement that is finned:

Or you can upgrade to a Yamaha R1/R6 unit, since that involves putting your own spade connectors on there anyway..

Blade connectors are fine as long as they are clean and arent heating up real hot.
The stock rectifier plugs arc a lot more than you would think, and melt.
Within a week I will have a vendor for stock plugs, or at least plugs that fit the pin configurations of most bikes.
I sell Regulator / Rectifier units that exceed stock manufacturers specs.
They are a little more expensive than the stock R/R, but they're twice as good.
Lifetime warranty.
( reason - we want any failed units back )
I sell a Stock replacement for around $100 that still has the same warranty as the better units.
And also better than stock.
And you dont get a warranty on electrical parts anywhere else.

Heres a pic of the $100 stock-alternative-green LED on face shows charging state.
Wire these units directly or order with plug.
(eliminating the plug eliminates the potential arcing guaranteed across the AC leads)

Thanks to all for the helpful information and resources. Seems like an upgrade from OEM unit is the smartest move for the rec / reg.
Some tech articles indicate the stator is also a high failure component. I have a 98 SH with 21K miles. Am I looking at replacing this soon?

Theres two Main failure states the R/R falls into.
One, the regulator dies and stops limiting the rectifier, overcharge. ( possible stator damage )
Two, the Rectifier dies and stops charging the system.
But aside from these two failure states, theres a host of other gremlins to factor in.
A short between any of the AC wires will cook 1/3 of your stator.
Shorts on the load side can cook the varnish off of the entire stator altogether.( BBQ )
In a nutshell , stator failures are less frequent than R/R failures.
They are also neglected more than anything else too.
( who wants to deal with a mysterious blob of tightly wound copper wire covered in motor oil? )
Easy to check one for problems though.
Check it out before putting a new R/R in place or risk frying the new R/R !
Thats why if we rebuild your stator, you get a R/R at dealer cost.
They can harm each other when one is faulty.

vendors of Blue Tungsten equipment.
Better than stock, life time warranty. Unmatched.
Theres cheap ones, but there are also very good ones. Heracles model R/R is worlds best, by a light year.
HawkRider should be getting his evaluation and testing model this week.
These will be in next years Tucker Rocky and Parts Unlimited Dealer catalogs.

Really the VTR uses the same R/R as most Hondas of the era. The most common of the compatible ones are the: CBR600F2, F3 and F4 plus a whole slew of others. (not the F4i though)
But since it wasn't a huge seller, most websites don't list it along with those above. So if you find one that supports those bikes you got one that works with ours.

totally correct. most even have the same plug.
A 2002 model triumph 790 custom has the same plug as superhawk,
and you can plug into that butt-ugly finned pancake and it would work.
Mostly beware of the two pins at the top. those are always your positive and negative to the battery direct... on any bike. Sometimes they are on different sides though. The other 3 wires are AC and are in whatever order, you can mix those up any which way.
