It is an old, out of production, never-very-popular, cult bike. Unfortunately, as great as it is, it appeals to a very limited cross section of potential motorcycle buyers; most people just don't "get" it. (Many of them are those I pass on the outside on my out of date "sport touring" bike.)

i plan on coming back to one as a project bike in a few years, and i really love the thing, but damn. people just dont get it.....
All the above comments are right. My wife asked me to sell mine I got a great deal on it but wasn't real keen on the color so not a big deal to sell. I had a tough time selling it. My 2005 $4600 with 645miles. I am back on the hunt for a blue one to match my gear and little less they tend to go for $3800. Too bad you are far away. I kick myself ... before I knew what a Hawk was there was one for sale 200 miles away for $35oo with 7k. It was up for 2 months I researched it ... found I liked them then it sold. Good luck.
My opinion is that good VTRs aren't worth selling for the price you gotta drop them to.
Right now people are worried about money. The only 2 wheelers selling are scooters and 250 Ninjas. Explain this to your lady, be especially nice to her. It just makes sense to keep the VTR and buy whatever else you want. Unless you're short of food or rent money, it's time to buy, not sell.
PS I laugh every time I read that Thomas Szasz quote. I read Ideology And Insanity in college. Great book.
