Carbotech Carbon fuel tank, needs repair, for sale in Modesto

SOLD

The carbotech tank that was on my buddy's bike developed a leak on the right rear corner were the seat meets the tank.

If anyone who is capable of repairing CF would like to purchase it let me know.

My buddy is asking $250 O.B.O + shipping.

But make an offer, it will be sold to the best offer. I will get some pictures of it in the next two days when I get a chance to head over to my friend's place.

Any idea what the capacity of the tank is? Is it stock size or larger?

Thanks.

If it is truly that size, I'll pass. Not offence intended, but I don't particularly care for the way the oversize tanks look on the bike...... Should be a good buy for some, however......

I am waiting on my friend to send me the pictures. I will probably go pick up the tank from him tomorrow evening and can take a good look at it describe it well.

btw it's the larger 5.8 or 5.9 gallon tank. The same one on the Carbochicken that is linked in the classifieds.

Pictures my friend send me.

btw the stock seat will need to be modified to fit this tank. The front .75" of the seat will need to be shaved back. The stock mounting tabs for the seat and tank works.

i dont see how you cant sell this. lots of very talented guys here that im sure could repair it althought idk what goes into repairing CF

seeing as the number 1 complaint on the hawk is range limited by small tanks and lots of gas consumption, this much larger tank would be a nice upgrade. GLWS

My buddy seems indifferent about selling it. He says he will get to fixing it eventually. But I think it will end up just collecting dust.

I think it needs to have a couple more layers of carbon on the outside of the leaky part; And coat the inside with a fuel tank coating product like Por 15. Red-Kote, Kreem etc.

That tank appears to have reached the end of its life. look how the fabric shows through the paint and how the seam is splitting. I say walk away.
It would take a great effort to save this.

Thanks for the insight. The CF fabric texture showing through the paint, I thought was by design. because it's been like that for all the time the previous owner had it and in the pictures I found from an old AD.

I am trying to find the manufacturing process this was gone through. It looks like the top and bottom half was laid up separately and was joined with epoxy after the separate pieces cured.

I was thinking the epoxy making the seam that joins two halves is what failed and could be re joined and then the inside coated with a fuel tank coating product to prevent gasoline getting to the epoxy. CF cloth itself is resilient to gas; But the common epoxies used is not.

But i wouldn't want anyb

It was made that way... and is commonly done to "show" the CF feature of the design.

However, I still agree, likely the layers have been infused with fuel.. likely the fix would seal the tank, but the issue would appear again.

Sealing the tank inside with one of the repair products mentioned above might work.... not sure they were designed i think to adhere to steel after being cleaners and etched with prep products.. not sure if they will adhere to the epoxy that was used to lay up this CF tank.

If it were free or close to it... Id repair the known leak, pick a sealing product and try it and see where it goes...... I've leaked enough gas over the years from loose tank lines, overflowing carbs or leaking seals.. Im just not that concerned that a leak would spring and I'd explode in a ball of flames

And it's certainly cheaper than my Harris aluminum tank, which it appears to be modeled after almost exactly.

the "puncture" looks more like dirt on the tank or an imperfection in the paint to me, the line just looks like a seam where the neck of the filler area meets the main body of the tank.

I'd love to have the tank, and repairing it is a pita and if you had somebody do it it would be expensive just in labor, but if you can do it yourself in materials cost it shouldn't be too outrageous.

I'm just in the I have more money going out than coming in catagory right now

That's just dirt, no puncture.

The line/ledge like thing I don't know. I will take a closer look at it and take a better picture with my camera in more light.

Went over to my friends place today and got more pics if the tank.

What looked like puncture in the previuos post was just the silver paint peeld off the tank when my friend removed a tank protector that was on it.

The ledge thing is the end of tank cap flange area.

FYI to the seller and potential buyers, you should sell the Sargent seat with the tank as the seat is has been modified to work with the Carbotech tank and will not mount flush to a stock fuel tank. The Carbotech tank is longer and wider than the stock unit, the Sargent seat that was with this bike was shortened and widened at the front to accommodate the larger dimensions of the tank.
