There are several on ebay. May not be within driving distance but even with shipping it's alot cheaper than a rebuilt or buying from a bike wrecker. Also I've seen several on craigslist. Use craigspal or do a nationwide search. Good luck.

I bought this bike with 1439 miles on it but it had been sitting for 3 years. When I fired it (after changing fluids) there was a bit of upper head noise but nothing major (or so I thought) I rode the bike for 30 miles and it broke a valve and damaged the piston. The shop quoted me $4200 to change out the piston because of the split case motor design. Not sure what else to do, I paid only 1500 for the bike but to put $4200 in it seems a bit extreme!

Like I think I replied elsewhere to this, $4200 is downright silly...you could EASILY find a good used engine and with the shipping still be well under $1k...if you're patient and look around you could do alot better than that. And once again a blown engine with 1400 miles on it must be some kind of new record...

You won't, but the cost to rebuild yours shouldn't be that high.

As for a used engine, here is one on ebay that ends in 5 hours and has no bids yet:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1998-...Q5fAccessories

Edit: and put APE ccts on the replacement to prevent a repeat of valves getting too well acquainted with pistons.

I didn't say a rebuilt engine...there are always several good used engines on ebay, and if you use craigspal and do a nationwide craigslist search you'll find several wrecked superhawks that from the condition of the rest of the bikes were obviously running well when they ran into whatever they ran into. Even if I wanted to bend over and pay retail moto connection here in miami sells good engines for around $1k.

Which cylinder was damaged? Do you know the extent of the damage? Would a replacement head do?

Yeah, you could ship that motor to a reputable shop, or SHF user, pay for the repair/rebuild, and ship it back for much less than that. I would suggest barking up that tree.

I've got a good running/shifting motor from a '98 if you're still interested.

Mine's being put back together now with new internals. I will be wanting one to dig into on my own in the near future. I want to learn and for me the best way is with my hands and eyes. When I do, I will be here surely with questions and coments. It will be inetersting but maybe I can build my own, (what Cap'n calls a) "duc killer"!

Which story, the one about breaking superhawks or the one about pouring money into them or the one about just digging in on your own?

For those who are concerned about the cost to ship an engine: BaxGlobal is who I use and they only charge $100-150 to ship an engine. There are a couple of snags, like it has to be shipped from a commercial address with a loading dock, but they can deliver straight to your house with a lift-gate truck. Surprisingly, it takes about the same amount of time to get accross the country as UPS or Priority Mail.

This is very good information to know, but since I work for USPS a bit of clarification is in order. I am forced to assume you mean you are surprised it takes them AS LONG AS UPS or USPS to get an engine across the country, but you are otherwise satisfied with the service. I'm right, aren't I? HNYall!!!
