Very puzzling no-spark issue
Very puzzling no-spark issue
Hello all! First time poster and part time lurker here. I hope to solicit some advice from the community on a very irritating bike.
I run a small Japanese repair shop in new orleans and we took in a customers 2001 Superhawk 996, (vtr1000) citing a no spark issue.
He had a Chinese key set on it and a bad kickstand switch, so I had him purchase an OEM key set and a new OEM switch.
Confirmed the clutch switch and kill switch were both sending voltage as they're meant to and they were.
No spark.
Tested resistance on the pulse generator and found it way out of range, so we replaced it with a new OEM one.
Okay, so I know from experience with the RC-51 that these ignitor boxes tend to die next. Replaced it and... nothing. Crap. Might be the ECU? got a known good one off ebay for 50 bucks and still nothing.
So thus far we know it's not:
The key
The ignitor
The ECU
The pulse generator
The kickstand switch
The clutch switch
The kill switch.
The fuse box. All fuses good.
Power *is getting from the killswitch to the ECU as well. No broken wires found.
I looked all over the bike and the schematic and couldn't find a tip over switch anywhere, though if you guys know of one please chime in.
Thanks for your time!

Do low voltage leads wires to the coils get power with key on? If no spark, but you have 12v at the coils, it's either the pulse generator, the ignition module, or the coils.
Is the main chassis ground clean and solid from the battery? Do all other electrical items work other than no-start?

If I had to take a guess..you could have a break in the wire from the pulse generator....somewhere. You can check the coils by simply disconnecting them and apply 12v with a pulse action and see if the coil reacts. But for two coils to fail...not likely. Not sure if the Neutral Switch has input on this issue...but worth looking at. It could be at a constant ground.
If there is power to the coils but no spark, then it is either not being pulsed or the coil is bad. Check power at coil first. If there is power then check primary and secondary resistance to confirm that coils are good/bad. Caution: I have had 2 coils go bad at the same time yet they both tested well within range and had spark for the first few cranks. A break in a winding may only manifest itself when the coil is hot. In your case it is apparent at all times. I have to admit that 2 bad coils at once is rare for me, yet possible however unlikely. More likely is the ebay cdi you purchased being NFG. Mail the cdi to one of us and we can confirm if its good or not by plugging it into our bike. My bet is either wiring or cdi/spark box.
