Sprocket Question

Bought my SH a few months ago from a good friend and have been on the forum almost every day since. Burnt up my R/R the second week. Anyway, I get exactly 100 miles before fuel light comes on. Thought he had went with 15/43 but he loved his wheelies and actually went with 15/44 (wondered why I had to adjust my Speedohealer by 17%). Looking for a little better mileage and lower RPM's on longer rides. Should I go back to a 41 or 43 rear? If the front end only comes up in first that's OK...

No disrespect guys, but who cares about the mileage, just stop and get some gas or run in sixth gear everywhere if you like.

My thinking is the bike is a blast with stock gearing and can wheelie in the first three gears with no problem.

Now if you are commuting long distances then you may want a different kind of gearing, but here in TN with all the hills, mountains and non-stop twisty roads i rarely run 5th or 6th gears and a 100 miles of twisties at a time before getting gas is plenty.

These guys are gearing down. Having a bike with poor milage is a drag on group rides where everybody else gets upwards of 200mi per tank.

Are you losing milage with the lower gears? I find it difficult to go more than 125mi before the light comes on. Less if I run it harder. I am planning to gear to a 16/43 soon.

Before, when I had 15/41 sprockets, I got 35-39MPG.

Now, I have 16/43 sprockets, I get anywhere from 30 to 34 MPG.

That's combined city and freeway, lower half of the RPM band most of the time.

Go figure.
