Not sure what to think!!!

I was getting ready to change my oil, so i went on a little ride to warm the bike up, half way through it my engine started to make a rattling/clicking noise. I knew it was a little low on oil, so i went a changed the oil and started it back up. still there. Im not sure if its the CCT or the values or the spark plug. Just wondering were to start.

If it's rattleing I would be pretty quick to check the CCT's. Maybe you caught it before meltdown.

Whats the mileage on it? From all that I have read on here throughout the years 15K seems to be the spot.

From the research I've done on member failures 16k is primetime.

That's what I figured, I just wanted to get some other opinions from some other riders.

Picked my Hawk w/ about 60k miles & the CCTs were rattling with almost every gear shift; changed 'em with stock plus a couple of valves & now it purrs like a new bike

So I put the APE CCTs in and the sound is still there. I tripled checked everything to make sure I put them in right. Now in thinking valve adjustment.

if it was valve adjustment would it have come on suddenly?

maybe the timing chain itself is stretched beyond spec?

could be something super simple too like a loose bracket somewhere or something

Mine started making a clicking sound earlier this year. It was intermittent and not very loud. You could only hear it at idle or just above idle. This may or may not be the same sound you're hearing but I adjusted the valves and it went away. Overall engine noise seems to be less also. It's amazing how much of a difference two thousandths of an inch makes.

I've check the valves, cam, cam chain, and the CCT, Nothing. so now im thinking it might be my piston skirt or a wrist pin.

mine is making noise too, gets a bit quieter when it warms up but still makes noise, I just put APE's in which Im gonna tighten ever so slightly tomorrow to see if it helps, haven't checked the valve lash yet, almost sounds like the pistons rattling, I am a motorcycle tech for a living so I am familiar with the common knocks, clunks, and clicks bikes make when stuff is wearing out. So, I'll let you know if it quiets with the APE adjustment, It has 35K on it btw, I just bought it for 2300 bucks, figured a good deal but we'll see after I figure out the noise...

My bet is on carb slides.
First make sure your synchronized and idling properly.
If that's ok, pull your slides and see how much wear there is on the thin edges of the slides.
Mine were worn to almost a knife edge near the bottom when I replaced them a couple of years ago.

FYI - I know a redneck with a motor in a box that is in your area if you want to build another while you ride this one into the ground. Don't know if that is your style, but I figured you might be interested.
