Normal operating tempertures?
Normal operating tempertures?
I've tried the search with no results. I live in Texas and the temps right now are about 100 +. If I'm riding around the neighborhood for say 10 to 15 minutes is it normal for the temp gauge to hit the mid mark where the fan kicks on in that short period of time? If I let the bike idle in place from a cold start how long should it take ( mins.) before it reaches this same mid mark on the temp gauge?
at that temp it seems about right for it to get that hot in that amount of time, if you are concerned you might check your fluid level and such, but I wouldn't worry about it unless it keeps going up even with the fan running
What about at idle? Fluids are all good. Here's my deal I purchased my SHawk wrecked about a year ago. It was really banged up and I've put alot of work into it in that time. This past week I finally put it all together and have been riding around the neighborhood trying to run good gas w/ Lucas treatment through it (drained the old gas out). Carbs were cleaned by Honda and checked. Mechanically it's running great and idle's as it should but when I pull the throttle more than a ¼ way it hesitates. I'm also having some backfire through the exhaust when rpm's are winding down it's seems like it's more than what should be normal. I had a KN filter with the M4 cans with factory jetting. I read on the site that without rejetting the SHawk it might behave the way my bike is so I removed the KN filter but still no change. TPS is showing 550 ohms, carbs synced, screw out 2 ¼ turns, new NGK plugs. I have a friend working on the bike and he thinks that it’s getting hot too fast. He wanted me to find out what’s normal temperature wise while sitting at idle. Thanks any help is appreciated.

If your just riding around a neighborhood and not getting sufficient air to flow through the radiators, it's gonna heat up quick(the 10 minutes you describe) and cause the fan to come on. I start up my bike and let it warm until the temp gauge moves a tad. Then I get rolling. If I'm stuck in stoplight traffic it heats up quickly and makes the fan come on. So I try to stay moving as much as possible. SH like air moving to stay cool. Try some "Engine Ice" as a replacement for anti-freeze. It lowered my temps to the point my fan doesn't come on as often.
Temp is going to be the same at idle as when it's rolling.. They run hot.. mid way on the gauge is normal. It'll go a little further, then the fan cuts on, gets back to the mid mark, then it cuts off... riding in town it gets hotter than on highway... cruising isd the worst
Rode in shorts at the beach for a little while last year, the metal right where the tank and seat meet gets SUPER HOT!!...

Thermostat opens at 163 - 171F. Fully open at 194F.
I'm not a jetting expert but you may just try to bump up the pilot/slow jets one size and see if it gets any better.

I used to have an '04 GSXR 600 that had a digital temp readout. On the highway it ran cooler. Pull in behind a semi and the temp would start to climb. Move back into clean air and it would cool back down.
More air moving over the radiator(s) the cooler it's going to run.

While its not as hot in NE as in Texas, I notice the digital indicator on my SH (2002) typically runs around 200-210 on the roads and highways. Getting stuck intraffic pushes it to 220 where the fan kicks on. Fan seems to drop off again somewhere around 210. Daytime temps here in summer are mid to high 90s.
