New SH Sitting for a few Years

I found a new SH locally which has been sitting for about 6 years. I'm assuming it was crated, but let's say it wasn't. Can anyone suggest any immediate maintenance the bike may need? If it was turned on years ago and left to sit are the carbs already in bad shape? Or if it was turned on this year is everything still good?

Appreciate any suggestions. I am hesitating buying it because of the fact that it has been sitting so long. So far the SH seems like a great fit, once I install stiffer springs, steel lines, seat, high mounts it's going to kick some serious *@(#$*%&

Is it new from the dealer new, or new from a guy who bought it and left it in his garage for 6 years new?

Is there gas, or what used to be gas in the tank? If so best to drain and flush out the tank and the carbs. If the battery has been sitting uncharged for 6 years it's probably no good. All else would probably be fine.

I'll add tires to the list... if NOT crated 6 years on a hard shoowroom floor makes for nice and hard tires...

Deffinantly change all fluids. Hope and pray that there isn't any gas left in it. Plan on a new set of tires also. They probally have some dry rot. Then drive it!!!!

It's new from a dealership. I would be asking for a new battery and new tires. I've never cleaned the inside of a motorcycle gas tank or carbs. Is it pretty straightforward on a SH? I am going to guess the bike has been uncrated for 1-2 years. Do they put gas in them after being uncrated or once they are sold?

If the dealer confirms it has no gas and has never been turned on should I still clean the gas tank and carbs?

Thanks for all the info.

The bikes come with a very light coating of cosmoline which is cleaned off after uncrating. It depends on the dealership if the bike is serviced (fuel/battery) or not. Test ride friendly places usually do.

You should easily be able to smell the tank for gas or bad gas (distinctive odor).

If there was no old gas in it to go bad (and a dealership should know better to begin with) you should be OK - it should also have the warranty if it was never sold so if there would be a problem you should be good to go. I had purchased a couple year old Nighthawk 750 back in '95 and it had the full 1 year warranty starting the day I bought it.
