So last summer me and abfellow SH rider found that my timing had jumped on one of my heads. We tore it apart and fixed the timing. Upon riding it I've noticed she smokes a lot. So I bought a second "parts bike" and swapped my plastics and a few other things over to that and just been riding that. Now my wife wants her own SH. So i tore open the top covers on the motor and noticed I had somehow lost the seal for the pair valve. Would that cause it to smoke? I have never torn an engine apart and little experience to be truthful, so I'm kind of hesitant to just start tearing into it, ecspecially since i'd hardly know what to look for troubleahooting wide. Thanks in advance for your time.

 

The PAIR system is just fresh air injected into the exhaust system post ex valve....I suppose its possible for oil to seep in the open port... but the exhaust leak that would allow would be horrendence.

More likely is your hurt the head.. valves , valve guide, displaced seal maybe.

Beg, borrow or buy a leak down tester (and you will need an air compressor, even a small oilless will work) Do a leak down test and you will be a lot better informed before you start taking things off
