Loud clicking, slapping noise

Hey guys thanks for any help in advance. I was out riding one day, got about a mile from the house going about 40 or so then all of a sudden I hear a loud slapping clicking noise, it sounds like it is coming from the top of the front cylinder, but its hard to pin point. I did not loose any performance when this happened. The noise gets faster with engine speed also. The bike is a 98 VTR1000F with about 23000 miles. Maintnance is current and never been an issue. Please help me figure this out so I can get back on the road hehe.

sounds like your cam chain tensioner to be honest. ebay, APE manual Cam Chain tensioners, about $100 for the set. forum search for "APE CCT" for more info.

Hey thanks for your response...If thats the case, if it is the CCT, I'm gonna have to take it to the honda shop, as I am not mechanicly inclinced and I would destroy my bike haha. I've got an appointment for it but I'm gonna keep reading up on it to see what other problems could be out there.

Don't let them replace it with another factory hydraulic unit, bring them APE's and tell them to take their stockers and shove it.

It's a very easy procedure, couple walkthroughs on it in the knowledge base. If you can operate basic hand tools and follow directions it should be no problem.

Ill keep that in mind, I wish I could get my hands on a service manual, if anyone knows a link to a free download that would be much appreciated.

Anyone know if there are any major changes from 03 to 05? I have an 05 and I went ahead and D/L'ed the one linked above. If there is an 04-05 version can you point me in that direction?

Thank you for your help
