larger oil cooler?

Hi,

Has anyone tried to mount a larger capacity oil cooler on the VTR? Anyonw know of one that may fit without having to re-invent the wheel, so to speak?

cheers

could you not mount one in front of the starter motor? Of course, you would need to ensure it is properly sheltered from rocks and stuff
Now if someone can just suggest a larger one to use

This is a pretty good idea, and I don't think it would be too difficult. Look in any automotive performance catalog (Summit Racing, Jegs, etc) and you'll find all kinds of oil coolers. There are only a couple of choices that are small enough to work on a motorcycle. The hard part would be plumbing up the lines. The VTR has a weird connector at the block, you'd probably have to cut that off the lines and fab it to the new lines.

The question is: Would you have to adjust your oil level for the new capacity of the cooler? Assuming that the cooler is full during operation, but flows back to the sump when the engine is not running, you would need to 'over fill' it with oil to ensure the proper level when running. I've had my engine apart sevral times (ugh) and I think that the oil flows back to sump when the engine is off, but I don't know for sure. That would be something to know before swapping coolers.

Good point Jamie. I would have to agree with you, as when I removed my cooler minimal oil drained out of it, thus suggesting it had already returned to the sump.

How about a VFR or RC51 cooler? How about trying a ally radiator specialist to see what a custom would be worth?
