If you have not replaced CCT- DO IT NOW!
I did the swap myself following the instructions posted on the forum. My bike has only 12K miles but I was going paranoid after reading about all these CCT failures. The swap is pretty straigth forward. But honestly the OEM tensioners looked like new when I took them out.
I just printed those instuctions and will give them to the shop that does my work. I do NOT want to F*CK this up!
Please post the mileage at T.O.D. I'd just like to see when everyone's are letting go.

It will make sense. Take your time. Basically, you want to make sure that when you remove and replace your CCTs that the cams lobes are facing away from the buckets and not putting pressure on the valve springs. This pressure is what causes them to slip timing when the tension on the chain is removed. If you spin the engine a few times with a socket with the cam covers removed you'll see what I mean.
This is a little conspiracy-theory minded but is it AT ALL possible that SOME of these cct stories are being put here by the sellers of these cct's? Kind of a good marketing ploy don't you think?
Now who wants to buy a bomb shelter? It's cheap insurance. You better do it now before its too late.
Just a thought.

All the bikes I see with this problem seem to be 98 models.
Should start a thread/sticky with your model year and the mileage when your CCT failed.
I just hit 11k, so I'm not too worried about the issue...around 30k, if I still have my Hawk, I'll start getting nervous.

I doubt the manual tensioners for Superhawks is what makes payroll at APE. Several Honda bikes have CCT's so I think their parts are an answer to a need and little more. Nobody else wants to compete with them because it's such a small piece of business.
The bike runs better, sounds better, since I had mine done.
Like others have said. I printed the white paper available here on the forum and took the parts and the printout to my mechanic.
I just installed APE manual CCT tonight which originally I was going to do it during winter. But this thread make me do it now.
left side had less exhaust pressure out of pipe, after installation about same and stable.
I am so glad it is done.

Yeah, you're right! My mechanic did lift the covers only to discover they had gooey caulk like **** that had been applied to the surfaces when the PO had the covers off before. Both were leaking oil - slowly but you know how valve cover gaskets leak - from the top down! He was real headsup about it and we ordered new o-rings for the covers.

Got my valves and seals installed. My buddy did a great job of cleaning up the valve seats and lapping the new valves. He also changed my jetting cause I have installed, new to me, Mig pipes. More flow than the Yoshimuras just prior to this fiasco(CCT). He and sync-ed my carbs too, off the bike.
By sight. Yea, by sight. He is an "A" tech. I would not have believed it had he not done it right in front of me.
Said he was at a Yamaha Watercraft school and told the Service Tech about it. The Service Tech told him to prove it. Well they took two sets of carbs and un-sync-ed them. Then one guy did it the old school way with Merc guages. My buddy did it on the bench and then installed before the the other guy was done. He was within spec. The Yamaha Tech was floored. Shop Techs get paid by the flat rate hour.
Anyway, got the head back on and the CCTs installed. Put the carb and pipes on then fired it up. Gonna have to check over everything in the morning and put the fairing on and go for a spin. I've been lost without her for a few days. Hope everyone has ordered their new CCTs. I know I did.

How can you only have 800 miles on it?
Like they say in the Honda commercials, "Get out and ride!".
I know you haven't had it for long. My '05, bought new in August 2005, now has 23,264 with original CCT's and oil changes every 3k miles max.
Ps: I don't do 12 o'clocks. could that be a contributing factor?

I think if I had to characterize the difference I would say it's quicker to the throttle, probably doesn't pull any stronger in a straight line but has better transitions from power on to power off and back on. That might sound stupid but that's the way I feel with the bike. It's definitely smoother. It's the same way mechanics talk about gear lash. Valve train slop is the first way to improve performance. Just my .02
