How difficult is it to change out an engine on a 98 VTR

Ive never worked on one though I am an automotive mechanic. Mine just rattled then locked up today . So I figured CCT's or rods etc. The old girl was running like a champ then with no warning rattle like h3ll then locked down. I have access to a newer engine and was wondering if there are any secrets I need to know before tackling this beast?

Any and all help is definitley appreciated.

I put new pistons in mine last year. I didn't find it that difficult. If you're an auto mechanic I don't think you should have any trouble at all.

I just took my time and was (mostly) patient. Honestly, the toughest part to me was rerouting all the wiring and hoses.

Here's a link to Gerrit's well documented piston swap.

If you have access to newer engines, I would just do a swap. You can tear down the hashed engine next winter. Sounds like CCTs but you won't know unitl you tear it down. It's ridin' time!

I have access to an 02 and an 04. I was worried about the 04 being to new. Will it be a direct swap or will I need to just swap my intake and carb setup or what?

EDIT.... where is the cheapest place to but factory type CCT's? Im not putting this engine in without new ones and a K&N at least

It's crunch time!!! If you put the o4 engine in and you're in *** deep already you might as well change out the harness and go for the full 04 digital version of the bike. You'll need a sensor for your gas tank but with a new instrument cluster you will have gas gauge, clock, foot massager - all the latest ****.

If you want a direct swap and the o2 is solid - load and ride!

so it sounds like the 02 is the way to go as far as money and ease of install goes huh?

EDIT..... after reading in my other post and "cipherin'" a bit I see the 04 will be a direct swap as well. I could just go ahead and do the digital upgrade is what the above poster is saying...Now I get it..... Us southern boyz aint all (ignernt)...LoL...Im just a tad slow on these two wheeled apparatus', or is it apparati ?
