Help! Running pretty rich

So I slapped on my knew cans last night and did a carb sync and noticed that while revving in neutral it would shoot out puffs of black smoke and the occasional flames. I was thinking that maybe it was time to screw with the fuel mixture screws? But cant really find a exact right up on here.. for some reason the search bar on here doesnt give me what I'm looking for but if I google it I end up finding a more accurate post on here but still not 100%.. I've just dumped a bunch of money to rejuvenate my bike and the more I spend the more I find I need to fix could a gummed up carb cause it to run rich but still idle(with the occasional hiccups that I hope my carb sync fixed) and ride ok? In between the crappy weather I've managed about 30miles of riding this spring and it seems to drive ok. Maybe a big sluggish but not terrible

Do you know if the carbs are stock inside? "Sluggish" can be a rich symptom.

I did some work 2 years ago with a friend. To my knowledge we changed the pilots to 48's and went with stock needles shimmed around .040 as per hawks carb post and I believe we went with 175f 178r for mains but I'm not absolutely positive

I know that the air filter is clean. But I dont think I've ever really messed with the mixture screws besides maybe slotting them when we rebuilt the carbs to allow for future adjustments while installed

well I tore out my carbs and adjust my pilot screws to hawks specs in his sticky as that's how I set up my carb a few years ago, and then found the bad thermostat in my other post, upon pulling my carbs I look in the rear head and saw a bunch of buildup on my rear valves, that pilot screw was a 1/4 turn in too far. Once I replace my thermostat and find the cause of a coolant leak in that vicinity I'll do a carb sync and try running her for a bit and i'll try your breathing methods

Breathe in breathe out was referring to the carb and new cans, however, you need to remember to do the same. I have found it extremely helpful in my 66 years.

Probably, but...while carbs are nothing more than a controlled fuel leak, there is a fine balance. I might suggest some dyno time.
