Four hours for jetting?

Four hours for jetting?
So the guys at Poway Motorcycle are done installing my APEs and adjusting the valves, and I pick it up Tuesday. Bill said they noticed the plugs were black when they pulled them to ease turning it over, so they hooked it up to their Exhaust Gas Analyzer and it was "all over the place," rich here and lean there, rich there and lean here.
Not too surprising, it's got aftermarket cans on it and the PO said he wasn't real impressed with the guy who he'd had working on it. Sometimes it will cough and sputter here and there, but had chalked it up to the Hawk's character. The worst that's happened there is it coughs right when I rev it to get the attention of an attractive young miss, and kill it. (Is it just me, or is the sound of the hawk dying just about as bad as that needle-off-the-record sound you hear in all the bad movies?)
It does burble and pop on decel, no real backfires though, that I remember. Both cans are blackened, the left a bit more than the right, and there's a bit of smoke visible from the left one when it's cold out. Haven't stuck my finger in em. Need lots of choke to get it warmed up when it's cold but it's pretty fine once it's warmed up. Didn't ride it this summer so I don't know how it is when it's slap-yo-mama hot out.
So: Bill says 4 hours to get it jetted, x $90/hr = more than I've got right now. I certainly don't begrudge paying Poway Moto over any other shop, but the financial reality is, the finances are damn near imaginary at this point.
Alternate options? or suck it up and save up?

Are you questioning it taking 4 hours? There's a little hole-in-the-wall shop by my place I've gone to for small stuff, chains, tires, etc and they've treated me right so far. May be cheaper than the place in Poway.

Well, I guess four hours makes sense, considering you have to make an adjustment, test it, correct it, test it, etc. I get the impression jetting isn't something you can really do without an EAG or dyno?

You can usually get it close enough without equipment but it will likely take several times to get it right... if you have a lot of time to tinker than you can do it yourself - I'm sure someone on here has the same pipes, slipons or other mods and can give you a baseline to start from so try a search... you can always break down and take it in.

4 hours imo is about 2 hrs too long. and it really should only be 1 hour but i'd add an hour for assembly.
any good dyno tuner can look at a baseline and should be able to ballpark it the first try with minor adjustment the second go round.
NOTE: i would have a BIG problem if they didn't call and ask if the work should be done and what it would cost.

either way you do it, its your time or theirs. The bike is a pain in the *** to change jets on - period. Even having done it a lot on this one model, it is still time consuming - you are asking someone that isn't nearly as efficient at this particular model to remove carbs several times. It takes time. Done right you change one thing at a time and retest. that is time consuming. Again, you can get very close, by methodically following a process starting with best main jets, needle position and fuel mixture screws - or find someone using the same filter and slip-on style as yours and altitude and just use their settings. Stock is usually not too far off even with slipons. But I think if you are going to pay someone to use a dyno and A/F ratios, 2-4 hours to rejet isn't that bad.

I asked for a workaround, and that was his response, and I feel that if he wasn't honest he would have insisted on doing the jetting soon, so, no complaints.
I've got a PM on this, sent a reply, here's the info I'd been asked for:
Won't have the bike back until Tuesday, but it's a 98, has D&D pipes, and google says the elevation in my town is 534 ft / 162 m.
