is this a "fart"?
is this a "fart"?
Good morning, all.
I've read some of the carb-based threads here this morning in an attempt to diagnose an issue I'm having, but I'm uncertain exactly what is happening.
Took my 2000 vtr to the shop for carb work. I'm told they rejetted and tuned the carbs, running the bike on the dyno and tuning the air/fuel mixture. The bike spent 10 years in Illinois and has recently moved to Colorado. It was running very rich to say the least. Due to the thinner air here, they went smaller than stock on the jets.
Got it back and it idled well when I picked it up, felt overall much more... predictable in throttle response after the work they did.
After riding for some time, I noticed a couple things. Something happens at low RPM that feels and sounds like a cough (to me). I feel it in my legs through the tank and if the situation is exactly right as I'm pulling away from a stop, it will kill the engine.
From my description, can you tell if this "cough" is a carb fart or a misfire? If it helps (or has anything to do with it at all) the original owner tells me he "flipped" the pair valve, essentially disabling it? The bike also has a K&N with no other airbox mods.
I *think* I'm going to give this shop another shot at helping me out in spite of this experience. I'd like to be as accurate as possible when I describe what's happening.

You should get the OEM Air Filter and Air Box Seal, and do the Throttle Position Sensor mod in the Knowledge Base section. Those 2 things should ease most of the fart out of your low end.
