engine clacking

I recently purchased an 98 with 17500 miles on it. The bike came with a well documented maintenance record i.e. oil changes, valve check. The bike was due for an oil change so I went from Honda 10-40 to Mobil 15-50
synthetic. The bike has developed a clacking sound at 1500 rpms only with or with out the clutch in. In every other range the bike sounds perfect. The acceleration is not affected in anyway just this clacking accelerating/decelerating or idling at 1500 rpms. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The carb slides have a tendency to open and close from the pulsing of the big cylinders, this could be verified by removing the air filter and run the engine while you check down the carb throats.
You can take off the tank, there's enough fuel in the carbs to make a test run.

Is this a big issue if not addressed immediately ... should I park the bike until I have time to try and verify this? Thanks.Dante1

Slide sound is almost normal operation, nothing really wrong, I can't really hear them on my bike, but a lot of VTR owners report to hear them loud, try a search on this forum, you should find many threads about this

If it is the CCT chain slapping from a bad CCT then it is bad and you need to fix it right away, if it is the slides, then no big deal.

CCT's are a possible cause, and need to be attended to immediately if they are malfunctioning.

It's the RPM window that points toward the slides, if the cam chain became slack, it would happens on decel. But check it out ASAP to make sure it's not CCT related, all you need is a 8mm socket and a Phillips screwdriver, you can just lift the front of the tank without removing it.
