I know some of you have cut short your after market exhaust cans that had been damaged. Has anyone cut open one of the CF cans? Wondering if the CF tube was sleeved with something to protect it from the heat. Any pics you could point to?

 

Here's some pics of the finished product of my TBR's. The right pipe had been partially smashed by my friend when I stopped at a stop sign and he rolled through it.
There was no liner on the carbon fiber. There is the perforated steel core, fiberglass packing, and CF outer layer. We wrapped duct tape around the CF to keep it from fraying or splitting and used a composite steel blade to cut. I am very satisfied with the end result and the pipes are louder. Measure twice cut once!

 

Thanks for the reply. I'm surprised the CF doesn't discolor from the heat w/o a liner.

BTW, those shorty cans look nice on the SH. I like the black color on the frame of the RC.

 

Actually because of the low density of the carbon fiber it is able to transfer heat very well which keeps them at most merely warm to the touch even on a hot day.

Hey Hotbrakes, I ride with an RC that has cut pipes too.


He bought the bike with the cut pipes (Sato racing) so I have no advice. I do know his bike is wicked loud. When we ride you can hear the bikes rpm's syncing at times.
