Coolant leak from drain hose

Hey I am a new superhawk owner :-)

1999 VTR 1000.

Just bought it today, said something about a gasket in the water pump leaking and dealer quoted him $200 to fix...

Anyway, he says when its running its not apparent, and when off it leaks..

I just poured about 750ml of water into the radiator on the right side of the bike, before I could crank it, it started pouring out of the drain hose.

Any ideas what this is and how to fix? Or where can I order the mechanical seal and does anyone have a service manual for me to poke around at?

-Josh

Welcome!

It sounds like the water pump seal alright. The service manual can be downloaded from the Forum.

Hope you get it fixed and start riding soon. There's a reason there are over 4,000 members on the Forum...these bikes are fun!!!

Hey, I searched for service manual and came up with no way to download it. Can you point me in the right direction please?

Also, if I ordered a new waterpump, are the mechanical seals part of it, meaning I can just drop it into the side of my bike and go?

Here is the pdf. Assuming you have the reader, you just need to save it.

As far as the water pump seal I agree with VTRsurfer, it sounds like the water side seal. There are two - the Oil side and the water side. You replace them both. You will need a press and possibly the special tool unles others here can suggest how to fab a tool.
Or you can drain the oil and then take off the right side case cover - 13 or so 8mm bolts. Bring that into your dealer and have him press in the new pump and seals. Not sure what that costs, but has to be cheaper than just dropping off the bike.

Good luck and welcom to the forum
