Compression and Rebound damping... what to look for

Hi everyone,
I would like to know, from the experienced riders here, on how to properly set the rebound damping on the superhawk. Other bikes do have compression and rebound damping, so a general discussion on how to set them will be great.

More so, I am looking to find out what I should be looking for (side effects) to realize if my current settings are too hard or too soft. Say, how would a hard-set rebound damping act on a bump mid turn? etc.
