If you think the bike is overcharging while riding, but can't determine if that's what's blowing the bulb (loose connection?)
How about a cheap ammeter or voltmeter.....hook it up and ziptie it to the triple clamp or something...and keep a safe eye on it while riding....should stay nice and steady.

Sounds like your battery is a bit low at 12.8, but could be fine...manual doesn't give tolerances, but they are usually +/-.

Have you cleaned/checked the operation of your hi/low beam switch? Could be shorting out...it is over 10yrs old.
Ahh, that is new information. I havent heard anyone mention the high/low beam switch. I know with one of my previous bulbs and with the bad rectifier, it was switching between high and low. So i should just dissassemble and clean the contacts??? Thanks for the info. I got the new starter relay and i was able to get the bike to start in about 30 degree weather. I did kill the battery once, but then i put the heater on it and she started right up after warming up a bit. I might try her today. I dont think i am having the .5 amp drain anymore. That was a lot, the bike would be around 13v once i stopped ridding, but then i could watch it drain down to about 12.5v over a half hourish. Thanks for the info.

I haven't needed to clean it myself, but after browsing the for electrical gremlin issues....I ran across a post about it.

My problem, I think is that my battery is bad....or I have a drain on the system as you did. I'm testing it this weekend.

My R/R sits at about 13.8V, no matter how high I rev...may be different under a load....

I don't want to pay a shop to test the battery. I haven't heard or found a shop that will test a motorcycle battery for free.

I'll just buy a new one. If it ends up being a drain, I'll just put a battery disconnect switch in. 8)

I'm wiring up my foglights this weekend, so I'll be 'under the hood' anyway.

I purchased a batter from batteries plus 2x and returned both because it didnt do anything. Also, it doesnt cost anything to have your battery tested. I would definately do that first. Mine tested at about 20% higher rating then stock CCA. It was very strange. I bought a battery still and tried it, but no change. I did find it was the starter relay. It was running about .5 amps all the time. So my battery would just drain constantly. The new one has worked fine so far. I rode for a few hours yesterday and i haven't had any problems. I have also let the bike sit for a day or two and then pop the trickle charger on it and it goes right to full charge.

Also, i would recommend batteries plus for the testing. They dont charge and they have good rates. I got my battery for 44 bucks there which was 10 bucks less then they normally charge. The guy liked me i guess

Good luck!
