Thinking I need to replace the clutch pack. There is a rattling sound when when pulling away from a stop. Also, if I do a moderately aggressive take off or start off in 2nd gear (forgot I had a first gear) there is a groaning sound. Helmet on, ear plugs in, I can hear those sounds.
Want to confirm that this is symptomatic of a failing clutch pack. The engine has 49k miles. I can make an argument that this is premature or the normal life time of a VTR clutch. I haven't done but a few hard launches. Mostly let the clutch out with low revs and then nail it. We all know what happens when you slip the clutch with high revs. So I don't do that.
Is there any other components such as, Needle Bearing or Outer Clutch Guide that could be making the sounds?
Looking at OEM parts as they seem guaranteed to be trouble free in function. Had considered EBC or Barnett. Prices between the three are close enough to not matter to me.
The EBC SRC kits are great, as are oem fibers and steels. I'd judge a clutch failing as straight up slip, does it ever? But yes, if I heard weird noises I'd go in there and look around. Pretty rare for anything in there to go though.

I am a bit concerned as there isn't any slipping I can feel. I'm going to open it up and take a look and replace all the consumables.
I've read somewhere that the OEM springs become fatigued a bit premature. Don't know if this true or not, as I am not experiencing any slip that I can feel. Though the groaning might be diagnostic.
Sorry, xeris, I have nothing to add, though I would do the same as you intend. I just didn't want you to think Wolverine was the only one out here paying attention. God, what a dreadful thought.
If your going to open it up always replace the springs. I only made that mistake once.
In all my bikes I use oem steel and friction discs but use either EBC or Barnett springs. They are about 10 to15% stiffer.

Do you do stand up comedy as a side hustle? Or is it your main occupation?
I'm still around watching and listening almost everyday.
I have been here since I finally found this forum after Greg Nemish's original SH VTR forum Runlevelzero closed.
In regard to this post, go in and see what's up.
Not wanting to give myself an kinahora, I've been waiting for the original clutch in my fastest red 98 to give signs so I had a good reason to go in and also install a FP complete shift kit and Marc's lightened flywheel; both of which I've had for at least a dozen years!

mine can make funny sounds kinda like groaning if i get heavy handed with the start .. iv had various plates and springs and never solved it, even with a new basket...its the one failing i find with these engines, the clutches are frankly ****. i just live with it
About 3 weeks ago I determined the noise and vibration was the chain! Knew it was close to the end of it's service life simply because of the number of miles, but never had a chain do this before. Didn't have any other exaggerated symptoms that I recognized. Fast forward to Friday and a new chain, problem solved. Not an ignorant mistake that I will make again.
