Choke pin won't stay

I got a question

On my 98 SH the choke pin used to stick all the way out and stay there, about 3 weeks ago, but now the choke doesnt stay open enough and I have to hold it about half way open. When I let go it slides slightly in and the engine flutters.

Also last night Iw as letting it warm up, and it reached the 1/4 way mark and wasnt ready yet, and i ending up taking off when it reached half temp.

Is this bad or can I tighten the choke somehow?

Also, how can I check for a bad CCT?

To tighten the choke, lift up the rubber cover under the **** and tighten the adjuster, then put the rubber cover back in place.....

The rubber right behind the choke **** pulls off to reveal the adjuster for the tension to prevent just that.

Mine used to be sticky as hell. Sometimes it was hard to tell if it was operating correctly because of it. I removed the entire cable assembly and lubed it all very well. Too well. Now it wont stay out! Tightening that adjuster did little or nothing for me. It is about as tight as I feel safe turning it right now. I'll just have to hold it out I guess.

Sounds to me like you lubed the tension plastic as well as the cables..

There is such a thing as too much lube.

Whoa, thanks alot!

Also, would you have any semi-simple advice for checking for a bad CCT?

Unfortunately there isn't one. When they go bad it happens all at once, just like a timing belt on a car it will be fine right up until it breaks and damages the engine. Thus like a timing belt, you replace it before it goes bad.

my superhawk does this too. i didnt know there was a adjuster. im going to check that when i get home tonight. i took a piece if rubber hose 1/8" ID cut it 3/4" long and cut it down the side. i pull out the choke **** and slip it over the metal shaft. it holds the choke open. just need to be there when the bike starts to idle fast.

Dear mboe794,
I'm in the same boat. I've learned to live with it. Maybe I'll get a new choke cable when I do winter maintenance.

Mine used to do it as well...As stated above, all you need to do is remove the rubber cover and tighten the plastic ring.
It solved the issue on my bike.
