Question Charge voltage

I had my battery replaced on Friday, but now I am concerned as the shop assistant told me that the bike should be charging the battery at 14.4 to 14.7V otherwise I need a new regulator. Is this true? My bike's charge voltage is just South of 14V and as far as I know this the the charge voltage of most car alternators too.

The shop for once is right. It needs to be at least 14.5 volts.

Oww (sound from wallet), now I have to go spend a lot more money on a new regulator. What are these supposed to cost and are the "non original Honda" replacement regulators any good?

PS: Thanks for your response as I had to get a 2nd option on this.

Do a search. There are a number of threads about using an R1 rectifier. I also saw a recent one about a newer Honda model that had fins on it.

Do a search. You'll find which r/r's fit, and a very good installation article.

I have one of these on my bike:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-H...Q5fAccessories

It fits with no mods, is the cheapest option, and has worked well for me for over 3 years. However some have gotten that exact one and it failed on them within a week.

The best option (also expensive) is one from http://www.motovoltage.com/ since they are the only people to provide a lifetime warranty, and you can take it with you to a new bike if you want. (Once my chinese one dies I plan to get a motovoltage one)

The "in between" options are a R1/R6 swap, or an electrosport one.

I have an '05 SH that I just purchased. It has a finned RR which may be the upgraded Honda RR that has been mention on some threads. The Honda part number is: 31600-MV4-010 and costs $136.19 from servicehonda.com. Part #9 on the fiche. CBR600 F1-F4 use this same part # RR, you may be able to roll the dice and get a used one from ebay like this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-...item20afcdf0b4

reverse part lookup: http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/WhereUsed

Rather expensive part, but from the sounds of it, you need one. JB

I'm probably wrong, but doesn't 14.4 to 14.7 seem high? I assume mine are good as long as they are in the 13.5 to 13.8 range. Any other thoughts?

The Honda shop manual, chap 16, calls for a charging voltage of:

Measured battery voltage (13.2VDC fully charged) < Charging Voltage < 15.5VDC.

So the charging voltage should be between 13.2 volts and 15.5 volts.

14.4 volts being about in the middle. I think much less than that voltage is not so good.

13.0 - 13.2 is a good voltage for a battery that is not being charged. (see 16-5 of the manual) 12.3 or lower is a battery that isn't maintaining charge.

16-7 of the manual states that the charging voltage should be above that of a good battery (13.0v) and below 15.5v

So 13.5 to 13.8 can be ok if your battery is in good shape, but the mid 14s is more normal.

edit: residentg beat me to it. lol

Although each cell can store 2.2v...x 6 = 13.2v...I've never seen an automotive battery that registers 13.2 at rest, unless it was just disconnected from a charger. And I've checked thousands of batteries. High 12 volts is good (12.5v or more according to ASE and many other sources).

As for charging voltage, the specs vary slightly from one manufacturer to another, but anywhere in the range of 13.5 to 15 or 15.5v is good. From my experience most charging systems will charge at high 13 volts to low 14 volts. I'd worry about the regulator more if it was charging over 15.5v, which can cook the battery.

I should have mentioned that my SH was not starting easily, turned over slowly. I put in a new battery and now it starts right up. The cheapest Yuasa was from servicehonda.com from the SH parts fiche believe it or not. I do not like the idea of cheap Chinese batteries in my street bikes. OK for dirt bikes that have a kick starter as well.

If your SH is starting ok - I would not worry too much. I agree with VTRSurfer - over 15.v is bad. It is a pretty easy test. Look at chap 16 and give it a try.
