It's a PITA unless you have a very small hand. If you are not familiar with the wire clip that holds the bulb in under tension, I think removing the fairing is the way to go. Although it's more work, it ends up being less stressful.

I just went through this the other night. The best I can help you is the open end of the retention clip, like the pointy side, should keep tension on the bottom of the bulb. The hooked part goes into the little hole thing on the right side, and the loop on the pointy end side is held down by the screw. I have big hands, so the fairing came off (at 2am lol). I took pics on my camera phone because I didn't see anything like that on the forum when I was looking for help, but now I cant get them off of my phone to post them.

Turn bars to right.
Remove connector (sometimes tough - wiggle it a lot)
Remove rubber cover
You will see a wire retaining clip. On the end it's looped, I believe. Push forward and up to unlatch it. It will swing out and back.
Remove bulb, carefully noting the position of the tabs.
Replace bulb. Don't touch the glass with your bare fingers.
Rotate retaining wire in and forward, then push forward and down to latch it.
Replace rubber boot noting the "UP" arrow.
Reinstall connector.

I'm running a PIAA Super Plasma GT-X. It's plenty bright.

I'm also running the PIAA bulb and it is bright and more white than yellow.

and yet, this super bright light and my loud pipes still didn't prevent this dingy blonde from pulling out in front of me last night. She was on the phone of course and looking right at me as she was pulling out! Didn't hit her, but I still took her mirror as a souvenir. I'm not normally like that, but I came so close to hitting her front fender and going over my bars, or at least crushing the boys.

I noticed a pretty substantial difference between stock h4 bulb and the PIAA. I'd recommend it.

Some of the older PIAAs didn't do well with vibration. Dunno about the newer ones. I use a slightly higher wattage Stanley/Raybrig HD bulb. I like it.

I use the sylvania silver star h4 bulb, you can get it @ Advance Auto Parts
for $20. The best bulb I've ever bought. It gives out a nice white light and is
bright as hell. Piaa is too expensive and they aren't worth the money.

I just put in the silver star bulb as well. Got if from Advance Auto for $20. I really like it and recommend it as well. Only problem is I took the whole fairing off as my baby got a new paint job this weekend and had a hell of a time putting the front fairing back on. But back to the bulb. Sylvannia Silver Star.

on the Silver Star... bright.. white... big improvement over standard. And seems durable enough, too... since I've had it in for a year or 2.
