cam timing

I searched for a cam specific thread but found none. Of there is a thread within a thread that would be nice. I did read the manual. My question is since I took off both heads can't I just set the RT mark on the crank and line up the FI FE (up and out) and RI RE (up and in) marks on the outside of the cams gears and be good? Of course rotate the engine around but is that bacially the jist of it?

Do you know how much the chains have stretched? That could definetly screw things up since it can vary by as much as a tooth if you are unlucky... Other than that, yes, you can "wing it"... But it might be a bad idea... Doing it the "right" way could actually save you time...

Ok, that brings me to another question. How much deflection and where do I measure that? I have the ape mccts so I have to re adjust them

Sorry for the slow reply to your PM. Like I said there, no you can't set the front cams with the flywheel at the "RT" mark.

As for setting the manual CCTs. You check for deflection between the cam gears. The easiest way would have been to see how much deflection you had with the auto tensioners still in and just duplicate that setting for a starting point.

If your tensioners called out a spec, then set it to that. Other wise run them in until you start to get tension between the cam gears, then turn it in just a little farther. You want them tight enough not to skip a tooth while the engine is running but too tight and the engine might not run.

So leave them on the loose side and then set them after the engine is warm and running.

Ya were playing pm tag now. I had meant the FT mark. So if the FT lines up the front came, RT lines up the rears?
