Cali hawks are heavier??

I just read in my manual that the california model is 428 lbs. 3 lbs heavier than all the rest. Anybody know why? Emissions I guess. Can I shed the weight?

Most bikes come in two models these days. One of them being a CA model. So yes, you should have a few more emissions doohickies on there. I'm not 100% positive because I've never seen a CA bike, but it should all be fairly simple to disable and/or remove. The standard model has a fresh air injection system is a piece of cake to omit. I imagine you have that, plus one or two other little things.

It's the EVAP system, easily removed. If you don't see a black coffee can in front of and to the left of your oil filter (looks like hell), it's already been removed.

I should add that EVAP is the fuel vapor recovery system. It's been required on all cars and trucks in all 50 states since 1971, and on motorcycles, and only in CA, since 1985.

What he said. And do some searching here on the forum. I'm sure this has been covered.

Thanks VTRsurfer. Mine is a 2002 and was orginally sold here in CA. Either the EVAP on mine has been removed or it isn't a CA model.

8541Hawk will become famous soon enough
Well if you want to know for sure sometime just look at the carbs. 49 state bikes have 1 vacuum port where Ca models have 3 vacuum ports.
