OK here is the scoop. I started my bike went to work and started and left work to go home. Later on that night a buddy and i wanted to go for a ride and i went to start my bike and all it would do is turn over. Had plenty of gas and the kill switch was not on. tried choking it and everything wouldn't start. It acts like the kill switch is on but trust me it wasn't.

Turns over fine
Spark plugs have a spark
Plenty of fuel in the gas tank and gas was on under the tank
Kill switch not on
Plenty of battery juice
Cylinders have compression
Air filter clean
Plugs are dark but not really terrible
Had 93 octane gas just put in it the other day so it is fresh

When you say gas is on under the tank I assume you mean the petcock switch?

I'd also check the vacuum line between rear manifold and petcock. Make sure it is attached properly, isn't kinked, clogged or cracked and also check to see you actually have fuel in the float bowls.

 

check to see if your getting gas to the cylinder, try starting it and see if the plugs are wet and or smell gas in the cylinder (Iknow thats not easy on these bikes). If not it may be vacume, cdi, little green goblins (they always mess with my bikes). Hope its simple and inexpensive. good luck

 

The next thing I would try is lift the tank, airbox lid, filter and squirt some starter fluid down into the carbs as I cranked the engine. If it catches it's probably a fuel problem, if it doesn't it probably isn't.

I'd also consider fresh spark plugs if they're black 'cause I'm not sure how bad too bad is on them.

 

Definitely try starter fluid.

This probably isn't it but I had a buddies 636 for all of august and in all the T-storms some water managed to get into the tank beneth the fuel cap (bad kawi design, not a tight seal). It reluctantly started with starter fluid but I had to syphon out dirty fuel and replace it. Did it rain hard after work? Like I said, probably not it but it happened to me.

 

Gotta ask, was the kickstand indicator on? Bad kickstand switch? Bad clutch switch?

Everyone is aiming at the fuel, not a bad idea, but there are other possibilities.

Btw, to make a little light of the situation, it's stuPid. LOL

 

I agree, check the kickstand switch.

 

If the motor is turning over i dont think the kick stand switch or the clutch switch would be the problem. If it was the stand switch the bike would run, but cut off when its put in gear. Does the hawk have a clutch switch? I dont think mine does? who knows it might and I just dont remember or I may have bypassed it. but i would not point to that one ether if the motor is turning over. But you never know, i've been wrong before.

 

proably just going to have to take it in. had a riding thing tommorrow and probably won't be done in time. still going to keep trying though till the morning hours arrive.

 

Snoboarding said "Spark plugs have a spark". I think this means that its not an electrical problem... i.e. ignition fuse, coils, side stand switch.

+1 on the starter fluid (However I'd remove the air box access port (clutch side, under the tank & between the frame rails) and spray your fluid in there. Then try to start it. Much less effort.

You say it has plenty of gas. Did you fill it recently before this problem surfaced? Did you over fill it? Check the archives. If you over did it all you have to do is rock the bike back and forth between your knees to get the air back in.
