People have different opinions on this, mine is to buy a new tire.

I would get a new tire also. you can plug them for a quick fix to get somewhere to replace the tire so carrying a kit is reasonable idea if you ride a lot - external plugs will get you home. and as drewC14 is saying there are others that will say if properly plugged they'd keep riding on them.

you can have it plug-patched. This is a combo unit that will not tear out. not to be confused with plugs or patches

For what its worth I have ridden literally thousands of miles in conditions from 15-98 degrees F & from 0-150+ mph (sustained 100+ speeds) with a simple plug. This included 2-up with full luggage. I have done this with many different tires/ brands/ etc. Just another opinion. If I see a nail/ screw, I yank it, plug it and move on. (keep an eye on pressure but you should anyway)

Plug patch
I have had to do this to almost every one of my tires. I ride hard and have never had a problem with my patched tires. As long as the hole is in the right spot...patch it.

I've used plugs, and it's always lasted the life of the tire. I would'nt use a plug on a hole larger than a screw/nail though.

Most shops won't do it for liability reasons. The local auto parts store has a kit for under $20. I've done it on cars and bikes for years.

My o2 is that the farther out to the sidewall the more dangerous the plug. In the general tread-wear area (for a commuter) I would think OK. The more aggressive you are as a rider and the higher the temps could cause a problem if you are not monitoring your tire pressures. If you're running a suspect piece of equipment you must up your monitor of that system. SOP

Great price for a pilot installed (in canada anyway..)

I rode for years with a plug/patch from the inside on a metzeler, no problems with leakage or anything.. From the sounds of your "newbie-ness" (please don't take ofence) you will be riding well within the limits for a plug/patch. Just don't take it to the track on a cold day and warm it up on the track!!
