Alternator cover removal question

I'm replacing my cct's. Removed the inspection disc on the alternator cover with no issue. The center plug would not come out and is stripped. I know I can get it out but I know some advise just turning the rear wheel. I'm removing my valve covers anyway to check valves so the correct TDC is assured. OR, can I temprarily remove my alternator cover to turn the crank and when done reinstall?

Yes. But you will have to replace the alternator cove gasket.

Any issues of using the rear wheel to turn the crank? Seems to be the easiest. Just not sure how easy it is to hit the tdc in just the right place, although w/ valve covers off maybe not so important.

no problem using the rear wheel to turn the engine over. Put it in 6th gear to make it easy.

Thumbs up

Centre cap on the generator cover removal. As it's made of cheese it's knackered so get a replacement otherwise you will have oil spray out with the engine running.

OK how to remove the mashed up cap. Heat the surrounding area with blowtorch, DIY (home depot) style butane or butane/propane mix gas burner will do the job. Then use a centre punch and a hammer and hit the cap a few mm in from the outside edge as there is a lip. Keep hitting it at a slight angle knocking it around in an anti-clockwise direction.

I bonded a 10mm hex bar into the plug that projects out about 8mm because my case guards blocked access. So now a standard 6-point box wrench removes the plug and a 1" long 1/2" or 3/8" square bar in a 6-point socket through the cover hole on the flywheel bolt also is turned with a 6-point box end wrench.

I removed the centre cap as cybercarl did except that I used boiling water from an electric kettle as a heat source. Loosening and tightening the cap every couple of months or so keeps it free.

Both a open flame and boiling water seem like a recipe for disaster. I use a hot air (heat) gun on low (mostly)...

Heat Gun - Dual Temperature Heat Gun, 1500W

on sale often for $8
