'98 fuel level sensor explanation

Hi All,

I've searched and found some info, but I'll cut to the chase. I'm designing a custom set of gauges for my naked hawk. I'm down to just one last bit that isn't working. The fuel level indicator. I've read that it's a level switch that uses the fuel to cool the sensor. But how specifically does it work? I assume it's not a shorting switch. Does it change resistance? Please be electronicly specific.

Thanx
Chris

going off memory from some previous thread, I thought when gas dropped below the sensor, it broke conductivity, illuminating the RLOD

You might check in the service manual too (click here)

Thermistor

Honda uses a thermistor to turn the low fuel light on.
As the fuel level drops in the tank the thermistor is uncovered and changes in temperature.
This changes it's resistance value and turns the low fuel light on.

Ah, that's interesting. Would you happen to know if the resistance goes up when uncovered or does it go down when uncovered? I can measure it, but if someone already has, it could save me some time.

Here's a circuit like I plan on using.

That is unfortunately not going to work unless you use a sensor from the 01 onwards... The earlier models just indicate covered or uncovered, ie reserve indicator only...

The good part is that it's a drop in replacement... Just find one on ebay or buy one from your local dealer...

I only need one of the comparator circuits. There are 4 shown in that diagram. Same theory though.
