Glad that you're mostly okay. If you have cop's description of the accident and the scene - sue the city for damages. Like - once the workers were repairing stretch of road and didn't cover one huge hole - four cars got in, had bent rims and other damages - they lined up on the side of the road (one was a friend of mine), got cop's statement, and the city paid them all for damages. Any decent layer could prove that a "ridge" is unsafe for a motorcycle changing lanes, even if riding in a controlled, steady manner.

glad to hear your're OK.
I have done one moderate get off on my VTR, and it barely had a scratch,
other than the foot peg mount, blinker and upper fairing panel. 350 usd
later all wa well.
It does help to be wearing the good gear. I will second that notion 100%.
See: http://www.moto-rama.com/photo/crash/
for evidence. Perhaps there's a claim against the DOT for creating a
road hazard and neglecting to post a warning sign? Seems like you should
look into the possiblility.

Here in SF I found a pothole left by the Public Works Dept. with my
BMW's front wheel . It tweaked it about 1.5" off plumb. I returned and
photographed the hole , establishing location etc. The city replaced the
wheel in about 4 weeks, and fixed the hazard.

Make sure you document the hazard before they cover it up. It's no
secret that things like that mysteriously get repaired after an accident
takes place.

Get well, get the bike fixed , go for a ride.

Woof Fall Down...

I guess its true, most accidents do happen within 3 miles of home...

Glad you're (mostly) OK.

... Make Big Noise.

Literally 3 miles from home, getting off I-64. They've just added a
lane at the end of the exit, and there's a lip or ridge or whatever you
want to call it between the old lanes and the new one. Invisible, of
course.

Pavement surfing ain't all it's cracked up to be. Not at 40 m.p.h., anyway.

Went down on my left side quicker than you can say "****". Spun around
a few times (uh... counterclockwise) and came to a stop across the lane
I was changing into. Did NOT want to move.

I was immediately surrounded by well-meaning ninnies from The Cracker
Barrel. Wouldn't let me get up until the EMTs arrived.

Some nice good old boy picked up my scooter for me.

~~~~~
Results....
Me: Pranged thumb, an elbow that looks more like a knee (but no road
rash), a knee that looks like hamburger, and a slightly torqued back.
Yellow Peril: Bent clutch lever, skinned up mirror & turn signal, shift
lever tip is *gone*, frame slider worn down (did its job!), and I'm
going to need a little duct tape on the tank bag.
Gear: 3-week old shield - toast. Scuffed up boot. Shredded (but
usable, I guess) jacket & glove. Pants that "Worm" couldn't wear.
~~~~~
Cop: "Good thing you had all that gear on."
Me: "That's why we wear it!" DUH.
~~~~~
Cops had no interest in writing me up for "out of control riding", or
anything else. Guess this goes in the "**** Happens" file.
~~~~~
Woofers is definitely going to be sore, both sooner *and* later.
~~~~~
Well, I better go get some antiseptic goo on my hamburger... er, knee.
Also time for Vicodin and heating pad (back) and ice pack (elbow).
(Where'd I put that old shield...?)
If this is reasonably coherent, I guess I didn't whack my noggin.
It's a fact that 79.4% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
