What is PAIR?

Hey, First post.

I have just got a VTR and it is a stock model. After reading previous posts some say that a good 1st mod is removal of the PAIR system.

What is this and how is it done?

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum. Removing the pair won't really make much of a performance difference, if you are running aftermarket exhaust it will reduce the amount of small backfires that occur under decel. The real advantage to removing it is that it opens everything up so you can actually get your hands in there. Also it simplifies airbox removal, and thus carb removal if that is needed in the future. Maybe an ounce or two of weight savings. Hawkrider has a write up of the details.

Post some pics up of your storm.

Cheers

Pulse Air Injection umm I think R is Recirculation.

It pulls fresh air from your airbox and puts it into your exhaust to burn up any gas that didn't properly burn in the combustion chamber. It is a emissions thing.

As for a first mod.. I think it is more of an optional one. I have yet to disable mine, so as a result with my aftermarket exhaust I get popping noises when engine braking.

My first mod was cutting the ugly rear fender off.

PAIR = P for pulse and AIR for air, Pulse AIR. In automotives it's also sometimes called Air Injection Valve or AIV.

It's was first used on some GM cars in 1979 as a cheaper alternative to the famous "Smog Pump" Air Injection System, called AIR by GM for Air Injection Reactor. Most cars haven't used either for many years now due to more efficient computer controls and engine design.

Effect on performance = Zero.

It basically sends filtered air to the exhaust to burn Hydrocarbons (unburned gas) that didn't burn in the combustion chamber.

+1 on getting rid of or trimming the ugly rear fender.

Thanks for the welcome. I read the post on the PAIR.

Im starting to think it is a waste of time doing it just now, think i will try and get a hold of aftermarket exhausts first. Might need to save up some money.

Also will be chopping off what i think is the fender. Im guessing its my number plate holder.

I have posted pics on all albums tab on this website, its labeled fate tan orange.

Unless it is a North American PAIRed Superhawk that was pining for its UK unPAIRed Firestorm siblings, and flown across the Atlantic to roost in your garage, then it shouldn't have a PAIR that need unPAIRing.

North American PAIR ?

UK TWIGGY PAIR

IS there anything about your bike to suggest if it is an import? Do you know the year and model?

Its a 2001 firestorm. All the guages are UK standard. Official docs say it is a UK model.

You shouldn't have the PAIR system on your Storm if it is what it says on the label.

If you haven't found it already come and say "Hi" over at UK Firestorm forum -and don't forget to post some pics!
