Need help,RC51/SP1 triple clamps

First up,Hi every one..i live in Australia,i started riding road bikes when i was 16,& have been riding ever since,(the last 20years).I worked as a motorcycle messenger for 5 years when i was in my 20's.I am new to the Superhawk forum, but not new to bikes!.

I recently bought a 2002 vtr1000 Firestorm off ebay,it was a insurance write off, mainly cosmetic damage, with broken levers, pegs, mirror, etc!I have fixed it,but yet to get it registered on the road.Hopefully i will soon.I think this Superhawk forum is great, you guys are very helpful & a huge source of knowledge.

I have 2001 RC51/SP1 forks that i would like to put on my Firestorm. The threads on the head stem bolt are damaged so i will need to get a new lower triple.I have been searching the forum & so far (correct me if i am wrong!)

SP1/CBR929/954 triples all work,i think you guys dont use the SP1 triples because they rub on the fairing,if this is correct ,i am building a street fighter so there will not be any fairings,so rubing will not be a problem.i see some of you move the radiators back for clearance,i plan on doing a front rad!

On Ronnies microfische web site the triple clamp washer lock, top & lower thread, top dust seal all have the same part numbers between the Superhawk & SP1,the top & lower bearings ,lower dust seal & steering stem nut have different part numbers.

So do the SP1 triples just bolt on using the standard Firestorm parts,But i need to use the SP1 steering stem nut,(& what bearings do i use?).I think someone said CBR954 work?

Any & all help will be greatly appreciated.

replace the bearings with those for the sp1.

the top triple is less of an issue rubbing. using the flat rc51 means you have less room above the triple for clip-ons, but more below. using the 954 triple (gull wing shape) gives you more room above for a clipon. The bottom triple is the reverse. that is where the rc51 (lower is a gull wing shape) WILL require you to cut away some of the lower fairing opening to not rub. the flat 954 triple stays up inside the fairing. Either works fine - the part of the fairing you trim won't affect it at all and is completely hidden. use what you have.

Thanks Cliby,I'v been searching for a while but couldnt find info on what bearings i need to use with the SP1 fork conversion. That is good to know that i can just use SP1 bearings! As i said i am building a street fighter,so i will not have any front fairing,so the triples rubing will not be a issue! Also the flat top triple should be perfect as i will probably be using dirt bike bars.

Since fairings isn't an issue, you can use either 929/954 or SP1 triples... Just pick one set as mixing them means the mount points on the forks won't match up...

Also beware that SP1 and SP2 is not the same... parts from an SP2 triple will not fit, altough the forklegs will...

Thanks Tweety,Yes SP2 head stem is thicker if i am correct.I have 2001 SP1 forks/triples,but my head stem threads are all damaged/striped,(i bought them on ebay & the nice people that sold them to me FORGOT to tell me the head stem was damaged)iv decided to keep it all SP1,my local honda dealer quoted me $750 for new SP1 lower triples, but my local bike wreckers has a good SP1 lower for $250.I havent found any SP1 triples on ebay & SP1 parts are fairly rare in Australia. My main concern was what bearings to use,Cliby said to use SP1 bearings.I found some on ebay delivered from America for $40,ill probably use these.
