Moriwaki Stage I engine

I bit the bullet this morning and committed to buying it.

My SH has a failed Rod bearing. This is a rather simple fix. Since I have to pull the bike down this winter, I started looking for upgrades. For all tenured SH owners, who is the man when it comes to the SH/FS? Roger Ditchfield, of course. I contacted him regarding his engine upgrades. He responded to inform me that he had a COMPLETE engine available. I responded this morning with a commitment to purchase the engine.

Here is the list of items on the engine:

VTR1000F FIRESTORM (SUPERHAWK)

Complete Moriwaki Stage1 rebuilt engine

Specification.

New main bearings

New big end bearing

New piston rings

Newly honed bores

New valve guide oil seals

New oil seals, all engine gaskets and oil filter

New CCTs

New oil pump

New gearbox selector forks, selector fork shafts & gearbox bearings

New Moriwaki Stage1 camshafts c/w Kent slotted camshaft wheels

Ported & Gas flowed cylinder heads.

Balanced Crankshaft

Polished OEM valves

11.6 : 1 Racing Hi Comp Pistons

Lightened flywheel

Modified crankcases - (to reduce piston downstroke pressure).

There will never be another engine of this spec built again as the pistons and special carbs are no longer in production.

It is perfect for fast open road riding, trackday with the open OEM airbox and Club level “Twins Racing” with the ram air system

Yes, it comes with custom carbs. The only part I have to transfer is the starter.

With the new job I will have more time and funds available to get to some track days and exercise her properly.

That's awesome... Be prepared for a world of difference.. After riding my Stage 1 motor(more like stage 0.75 compared to yours) and switching to a stock superhawk for a bit, the motor makes it a completely different bike.

Congrats. There are no more able hands for all things VTR than Roger. I am certain you will be extremely happy with your purchase.

98VTR, I'm hoping so. I love this bike, through and through. This should serve to amplify the other changes I have made.

I have a modified (braced) swingarm ready to go on, Andrew at Little Horse Cycles did the custom brace for me. I already have the GSXR front end. A trip to Computrack to have the suspension tuned will be in order.

The price is a huge commitment, but I think a zero mileage motor will make it all worth it.

I'm sorry, that would be impossible at this time. You will need at least 5 years and a min of a thousand posts to be considered a candidate for a moriwaki.

The serious answer... You can't... Unless you find someone with all the parts that are willing to part with them... Several of the parts aren't made anymore, and some parts are made but not by Moriwaki... You can get performance parts, and build one up yourself, to similar spec though, but it will cost a pretty penny...

My engine is a somewhat similar spec and it cost me a few $$$$ to build. As Markus (Tweety) said, parts are getting every more difficult to find, that is when they are even available (bike has been out of production for 6 years now, and truthfully, was never a superbig seller anyhow, its sporting pretensions having been usurped by the RC51 a short three years after it was introduced). As for this specific engine, it was put together by "The Man" himself, Roger D, so you know it was well done...

Methinks you'll have a lot of fun with your upgraded VTR

There are some worthwhile and effective things that can be done for relatively little money.... however, they won't get you near to 130 bhp........

Mikstr, you hit the nail on the head. It's a zero mile engine built by Roger. Can it get any better or more reputable than that?

What did I pay? Well....£2000 plus shipping. I'm figuring between $4000-4500.

I happened across it at the right time. That is how I'm getting it. I contacted him about his engine packages and he offered me this engine.

I am most curious to see the custom carbs that he mentions in the email. Looks like I'll be going back to dual exhaust, just have to go to a custom high mount.

Nath, you are too funny.

Thanks guys, I'm anticipating a lot of fun riding.

congratulations on your purchase. Was wondering what kind of CCTS? And are you going to do any swingarm and/or frame bracing to handle all that torque? What mods does Roger recommend for this?

Nath, I haven't asked Roger about bracing yet. I do have a swingarm ready to go in. Andrew at Little Horse Cycles did it up for me.

Here are the pics that Roger sent me.

At that output, I'd suggest adding ears to keep you from twisting off the swingarm from the engine block...

Factory stock auto tensioners.... They actually do work well if taken care of and Roger doesn't like manual CCTs on street bikes.

I think I know what you mean, but am not 100% sure. I think you are referring to the frame extensions down to the swing arm/rear set bolt.

I am definitely open to ideas, and will be contacting Roger regarding this.

All input is appreciated. At this cost, I don't want to have more down time due to something that could have been avoided.

Intake Pics

When you get the engine please post a pic or two of the intakes. I'd like to see how they compare to stock.

Nice. He told me he had it listed on eBay for £2500.

Zxbud, thanks for reminding me. I need to ask Roger if I can use the machined velocity stacks that I purchased from Dr Honda. I don't believe that it is coming with an air box, just the "custom" carbs.

I doubt if the Dr Honda stacks will work. If the carbs are FCR they already have stacks.

I'll be writing Roger in the morning to inquiry about some of these questions.

I know this much, I'll be going back to factory gearing. LOL. I'll have plenty of HP and torque.

Did you mean replacing the stock spring to make the auto tens' work reliably?
I wondered if someone already did fix this issue with the existing design.

Cool Honda Cam Chain Tensioners

It,s very interesting that Roger uses "factory" cct's. I wonder if they're what you and I would order or an HRC part for VTR's or another model?

I know that 8541Hawk has the very high mileage on his and I think VTRSurfer is high mileage, like 60+ with stock.

I also know I read alot of failures here on the forum. I've asked this before? What gives, what's the variable.

Is it how the bike is operated? I think both 8541Hawk and VTRSurfer are running above the posted limit! Is it wheelies, just plain hamfisted throttle/braking cause major chain tension/oil pressure fluctuations?

I have a set of Kreigers (uninstalled) and my bike has been run hard and put away wet by the PO and I'm still addressing those issues. But frankly I like the thought of auto adjusters so I'd really likel to get a handle on what the fault is.

Tweety before you go off on me, as an engineer you know it can't be random! There has to be something.
