Just got word back from the first chap, says he`ll have some cost numbers for me tomorrow morning. I asked him to prepare two estimates for me: for a single set, and for ten sets. We can go from there.

cheers

Be sure to ask him if they can get access to some material that is already tubular. Less material to remove than a solid chunk/slug of material. Should save on the cost.

This thread is very cool. I know nothing of the subject but could these be made as a threaded two piece unit so the length is variable for fine tuning and testing purposes or are there to many other calculations that are needed.

Anyone else getting estimates on having these built? I thought we had some other leads... As for me, am still waiting for two estimates to come in...

P.S. I just forwarded the prints of to Peter (Firestorm996) as he apparently had connections with two possible suppliers...

Funny you mention that as that is one of the versions I was toying around to come up with. It could be done a few different ways I think.

One way is to be done with having a "base" collar and then have the body of the stack threaded on the outside so that it could be tuned up and down the threaded body thus altering the overall height of the stack.

You could also do it with various predetermined inserts meaning "levels" depending on the power needs. Say like make 3 different inserts each giving the bike its own tune by the height of the threaded insert.

Trying to do it without inserts is what I would like to see as then it would be fully tunable.

How can so many people have forgotten where they put their velocity stacks?

I like the idea of a tunable one. It would be easy enough to attach a wire around a threaded stack and feed it through a hole of the air box. You could even put a set of dials the front and rear one stacks attach to. This way while riding you can fine tune the dials to get the precise length and would not have to remove everything to gain access to make a small adjustment. Once everything is dialed in you could take mesaurments and your good to go.

Agreed it's a great idea (one I have pondered for some time using modded stock stacks). However, for myself anyhow, I will focus on getting a set of these as they are proven effective, and provide benefit in the very rpm range I am seeking.

Or while you are at it.. Ad a servo and a small PC or PDA and have it adjust on the fly.. Kinda like the Yamahas do.

edit: Though even the Yamaha ones just have two lengths.. They are not totally variable.

the billet aluminum would be the best for the stacks, you could spin a slight spiral cut in them and that would help too. the aluminum naturally cools the intake charge a bit.

(just kinda skimmed the thread, ive been busy latly)

What if the aluminum stacks are heat soaked and much hotter than the intake charge air?

they would be cooled by the incoming air.

and the incoming air would be heated up reducing power

what is there to heat the stacks?

the incoming cool air would keep them cool.

the airbox and carbs are not being directly heated
by anything.

unless your planning on putting a toaster oven in there
to keep your food warm!

He is just making the point that having the stacks be Aluminum will not cool the air any.. The aluminum will be the same temp as the air, just like plastic or, fiber ones would be.

he stated "what if they got heat soaked?"

again not gonna happen.

just answering his question.

Do we need to foresee a liquid-nitrogen cooling chamber around the outside then?

i actually have a portable a/c unit that i am going to include in my build.
it should cool the intake charge enough to give me a 20 horsepower boost.
i figure if nitrous cools the charge why not freon?......

First cost estimates are in

Here you go. I am still waiting on another.

1) Micky’s first supplier proposal: 40 pc, $78 CAN ea

2) Peter’s supplier proposal:
20 pc $ 65 ea
60 pc $ 48 ea (assume it's USD... Peter?)
N.B. this figures in fixtures and programming for 1st run subsequent runs will be less

- all surfaces machine finish no plating,
- 30 days lead time customer supplied IGES file in inch format

All intersted parties please step up. NO TIRE KICKERS!

20 pc I'm assuming means 10 pairs? ie for 10 people and a total of $130 + shipping?

If so I'm in... That I can spend and still get away with it around here...

Is someone going to be able to test a set before they go into production. If so and they test out OK then I am in!

Shayne has been running these for a long time, and Rick has them in his as well. The chap who developed these is a reputable tuner who built racing VTRs pumping out over 140 bhp. He did extensive flow-bench work to develop these.

In or not? It,s really that simple. Sorry, but these things tend to take of on tangents and degenerate into tire kicking festivals (look further up for proof...).

So far, I am in, and so is Tweety. Anyone else?
